Director of Operations

The Director of Operations reports to the President and is a member of the senior Leadership team.

Lead the development and implementation of short and long-term operational strategies that will deliver the best customer and employee experience in the industry.

Lead all strategic and tactical aspects of operations including demand and production planning, procurement, production, quality assurance, safety, engineering, facilities, maintenance, logistics & supply chain, across all sites.

People :

  • Identify and implement plans to increase floor level engagement and drive production goals, optimize performance, and engage employees in continuous improvement activities
  • Ensure the right skills, capabilities and mindset are present at all times in the Operations area, through establishing the appropriate training and development programs, as well as the appropriate work environment and leadership
  • Incorporates critical conditions and cost prevention targets into negotiated UNION agreements
  • Anticipate issues that may impact the performance of Puratos Canada during the contract and address those issues effectively through appropriate actions
  • Ensure that hourly teams are managed effectively in terms of staffing levels, performance management by shift and or individuals
  • Quality :

  • Responsible to establish the appropriate Quality system throughout the Company, ensuring that GMPs, and quality initiatives.
  • Ensure the necessary certifications are obtained and adhered to at all times eg. FDA, USDA, OSHA, BRC, Rabbinical (Kosher))

  • Achieve Group Targets on Complaints and Right-First-Time performance
  • Ensure Quality plans are carried out at each site
  • Ensure various governmental certifications always adhere
  • Health, Safety & Environment :

  • Lead safety program with a Continuous Improvement Mindset and develop proactive safety initiatives.
  • Implement programs to reduce the environmental impact of our operations
  • Identify and eliminate risks
  • Complexity management / reduction
  • Production :

  • Responsible for demand and production planning, procurement responsible quality assurance, engineering, facilities, maintenance, logistics & supply chain, across multiple sites.
  • Deliver on financial and productivity metrics (Cost / Ton, Tons / FTEs, inefficiencies, Operations Cost as a % of Sales, Working Capital, OEE)
  • Drive Operational Excellence in a culture of Continuous Improvement and Right- First- Time behaviors throughout the business.
  • Ensure manufacturing and distribution of products at the lowest delivered cost, consistent with product specifications, and customer service objectives, and compliant with regulations.
  • Ensure an effective S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) process is implemented, according to Canada’s strategy, adopting and embedding industry and Group best practices.
  • Have ultimate responsibility for cost reduction and control programs while maintaining optimal utilization of manufacturing capacities.
  • Develop financial budgets and conduct ongoing analysis to ensure brand business performance is maximized.
  • Ensure that effective systems, procedures, and financial controls are established within the functional areas of manufacturing, purchasing, warehousing, and distribution.
  • Procurement :

  • Responsible to develop, implement and direct short-term and long-term procurement and sourcing strategies, in line with Operations and Corporate goals.
  • Collaborate with the US and Global Procurement team, to leverage Global purchasing.
  • Manage vendor relationships with integrity to ensure that we have the lowest price and best service
  • Risk Management
  • Supply Chain :

  • Develop and implement logistics (warehousing and distribution) procedures, policies, and practices to ensure that materials are transported and inventoried in the most effective, economical manner for optimum supply assurance from a full value chain perspective and deliver +98% Service Levels
  • Implement S&OP processes
  • Optimize Working Capital through various strategies
  • Capex :

  • Responsible for the preparation of all capital investment projects, equipment, expense budgets, maintenance and coordination of these financial estimates and plans.
  • Direct the selection, and installation of equipment necessary to maintain facilities in a competitive position, as well as having ultimate responsibility for cost reduction and control programs while maintaining full utilization of manufacturing capacities.

  • Minimize spending risk through effective supplier management strategies and competitive quotations
  • Ensure the right equipment is purchased and existing equipment is properly maintained
  • Profile
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in managing operations in manufacturing, preferably food processing is required.
  • Bakery manufacturing and multi-plant experience is strongly preferred. Significant exposure to broad business management, including the development, analysis and management of operational, logistics and procurement strategies.

  • Experience and accomplishments in good manufacturing / best practices and organizational design are essential. Due to the complexity of scope and requirements with this position, experience of working in a large organization is necessary.
  • A leader with a collaborative, team-oriented style, who should be able to educate, motivate and inspire others in an organization driven by a sales / service culture.
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation skills are critical.

  • Strategically oriented, demonstrate strong business acumen and exhibit an in-depth understanding of manufacturing, distribution and warehouse, logistics, procurement, and production planning functions.
  • A high level of analytical ability to drive operational efficiencies and initiate continuous improvement programs.
  • Proven ability to develop and sell key operational business strategies.
  • CSSC Certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certificate highly desirable.
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office Suite, and ERP systems such as SAP / Oracle with the ability to quickly grasp new software.
  • Experience with unionized environments is an asset.
  • Requires travel up to 25% of the time.
