Job Description

The District Manager manages (one or more) districts and facilities which will be geographically separated from one another.

The District Manager is responsible for the different terminal's achieving their targets while also ensuring necessary planning and budgeting takes place in order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the terminals in the future.

People Management

  • Evaluate employee performance against established objectives
  • Provide direction, leadership, and coaching to the respective managers within the district to enable them to achieve their personal objectives and support their operational targets
  • Execute key activities in the employee lifecycle to manage Unit Managers (Including employee recruitment, promotion and termination activities etc.)
  • Provide input and assist the unit manager in managing the key activities in the employee life cycle within theterminals in the District (including employee recruitment, promotion and termination activities etc.
  • supporting the recruitment process through interviews, road tests and on-boarding

  • Lead diverse work group over a large geographical region (employees, contractors, suppliers, and managers) in order to deliver high quality service and be as productive as possible in each terminal
  • Perform OJS (On the job supervision) to complete Driver Certification route rides as required.
  • Improve overall H&S practices, safe driving techniques, communication plans and chairing committees.
  • Identify existing training gaps and provide improvement plans and facilitate courses as required.
  • Create a positive work environment, building employee loyalty and a team atmosphere
  • Responsible for completing a variety of reports and documents
  • Responsible for communicating and implementing policy, procedure or programs
  • Operations

  • Partner with Sales and Customer Solutions in order to secure new business for growth and revenue generation.
  • Identify business challenges and performance metric shortfall and work with Unit Managers in ensuring appropriate action plans are introduced, monitored and implemented
  • Review the operating metrics and financial performance of services within the respective terminals
  • Implement appropriate controls to safeguard assets and mitigate risks within respective terminals
  • Review compliance reporting, including Federal CLC Part II and employee evaluations.
  • Drive interdependent safety culture and adherence to safety policies within the respective terminals
  • Responsible for the labour relations climate that will protect the values and objectives of Purolator
  • Apply collective bargaining agreement and labour relations understanding in all operational and employee related decision making
  • Provide guidance to Unit manager with respect to resource allocation, workload assignment and schedule management to optimize day-to-day operations within the respective terminals
  • Represent and model Purolator’s values and culture in the management of the respective terminals
  • Support the Unit Manager to conduct injury and accident investigations and necessary follow ups, and implement necessary corrective measures, if necessary
  • Coordinate self-checks and attend quality management reviews
  • Responsible for providing support to on-road performance improvements
  • Conduct Research and analysis of routes using reports, telematics, route historical data, preload reviews etc.
  • Continuous improvement

  • In conjunction with Unit Managers, continuously identify and drive opportunities for terminal improvements using lean principles and methodology
  • Monitor budget and operating metrics while diagnosing and improving processes, and performance per terminal in the district.
  • Customer service

  • Manage the effective and efficient resolution of all customer issues and ensure all work efforts aim at providing outstanding customer services within the respective terminals.
  • Education, Experience and other Requirements

  • Post-secondary education required and certification in Coaching or management preferred
  • Fast paced warehouse or transportation experience
  • Experience managing unionized and non-unionized staff and virtual people management
  • Experience in safety leadership
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple deliverables
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Knowledge of SAP, particularly payroll and finance module
  • Facilitate effective project management
  • Ability to handle stress and anxiety
  • Ability to communicate in English and French (an asset)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different levels of the organization
  • Knowledge of logistics
  • This role requires travel within the Central region and may include the performance of work on off hours’ to accommodate facility shift work
