Principal Accountabilities :
Participates as a member of the software development team, providing expertise on software architecture best practices, and contributes input to management on the development and execution of strategies and plans including long term IT strategy, architecture and development roadmaps.
Provides technical leadership for the software architecture design committee with representation from application designers, front end and back end developers, database analyst, dev-
ops and IT security, and manages the architectural roadmap for internally developed systems.
Utilizes system engineering concepts and techniques to estimate and optimize software architectures and system designs for development effort, reliability and scalability.
Document software architectures that satisfy functional and non-functional requirements, and that balance timeliness, flexibility, complexity, robustness, security, availability, development cost and component software or service cost.
Evaluates or endorses the use of specific open source or commercial components and technologies, ensuring they align with IT architectural strategy, risks, long term sustainability, and team capabilities.
Contributes technical input for major architectural build / buy decisions.
Documents and presents software architecture in a manner appropriate for the audience ranging from high level presentations for IT management, through to detailed technical specifications and training sessions to developers.
Works directly with developers to introduce and refine new software technologies and architectures. Acts as a central contact for architectural decisions during platform development, providing clarification on assignment of functions to system entities, interfaces between entities, schedule risk, production sustainability needs, and technical debt.
Monitors development implementations across platform teams ensuring solutions meet requirements and align with specified architecture and reference design guidance.
Participates in platform team code reviews and design reviews where appropriate. Mentors developers to deepen their understanding of architectural designs and new technologies.
Works with developers to analyze and prioritizes technology needs to deliver, scale and sustain the platform roadmaps.
Prioritizes and coordinates the introduction of new technologies or system optimizations via a software architecture and technology roadmap that supports and aligns with overall IT strategies and priorities.
Proactively leads the resolution of escalated issues within reporting areas of accountability.
Provides status reports at regular intervals to ensure the Director is informed of major achievements and issues.
Conducts research and continuously maintains knowledge and awareness of technology products and industry trends, identifying and recommending opportunities to support and enhance application development initiatives.
Assesses external vendors and service providers, recommends contract solutions, and subsequently manages selected contractors in the delivery of services.
Acts as the lead technical liaison with business partners on technical projects involving setting up data sharing interfaces, transactional system interconnection, or collaborative solution development.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience :
Requires a degree in computer science or engineering, supplemented by 8 to 10 years of progressively more responsible technical leadership including at least 5 years of responsibility for software architecture.
Mastery of the concepts, theories, practices and techniques of software systems.
Broad technical proficiency across entire software systems, including SQL databases (Oracle), NoSQL databases (Mongo), service frameworks (.
NET, Python, node.js), open source web application frameworks, application program interfaces (REST, OpenAPI), and client UX systems.
Technical acumen to identify important architectural decisions that will have a high impact on overall development outcomes.
Technical insight to make careful choices among multiple options in an Agile development context.
Strong technical documentation skills to provide system and interface specifications and descriptions for internal and external developer audience.
Strong interpersonal skills to rally a range of technical contributors around a common architectural vision.
Solid planning skills to support the Director in continuously changing software architecture deployment and maintenance.
