Principal, TFM Economic Research Group - Asian Markets

The Opportunity

The Principal, Total Fund Management, Economic Research Group -Asian Markets will be responsible leading for a variety of research activities that support the strategic objectives of the Plan.

Reporting to the Chief Economist, the Principal will help shape and define a research agenda that impacts the investment performance of the Fund at the highest level.

Who you'll work with

This role works in collaboration with the other investment departments fund-wide as well as our Strategy & Risk team. Reporting to our Chief Economist, you will collaborate with a network of talented colleagues covering additional global regions.

You will have the chance to define and influence key relationships with our deal teams, Board of Directors, and senior leadership.

What you'll do

  • Contribute to macroeconomic and financial market research, with a focus on Asia, in support of the investment process within TFM and other departments.
  • Assess the global economic environment as well as develop medium and long-term outlooks for financial markets to support the Ontario Teachers’ Global Macroeconomic Framework.
  • Support research into the development of various ex-ante risk indicators in areas such as the economic cycle and monetary policy.
  • Provide support to our investment departments in making economic assumptions underpinning their investment decisions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with economic and capital market professionals from central banks, investment banks, research organizations and other pension funds.
  • Prepare written reports and presentations to inform the investment decision-making process within Teachers’.
  • Work cross-functionally with other team members and departments to ensure continued alignment with OTPP’s vision, mission, goals and values.
  • This includes supporting and sharing knowledge with other areas of TFM, as well as responding to ad hoc requests from other departments.

  • You will be an important player in shaping the Economic Research Group’s agenda as it builds its brand and credibility.
  • Prepare research on our Global Macroeconomic Framework related to the Asia market and how it fits within the total fund’s strategic asset allocation.
  • What you'll need

  • Master’s degree in Economics or Financial Economics. A PhD will be an asset.
  • At least 6 - 8 years in macroeconomic research or capital markets-related experience with a focus on Asia.
  • Strong quantitative and econometric skills, and an understanding of their application to portfolio construction and investment strategy modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated presentation skills.
  • A proficiency in a major Asian language will be a plus.
  • Deep understanding of macroeconomic principles and capital markets.
  • An ability to research and test out new ideas / concepts to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex subject matter to non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience with EViews or equivalent statistical package is an asset.
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as to perform effectively in a collaborative environment.
