The Associate in the Canadian Corporate Banking department reports to the Managing Director, Head of Corporate Banking and is responsible for assisting the Managing Director in achieving the department’s financial and non-financial goals through the effective implementation and execution of focused marketing and credit assessment activities and the proper application of the Bank’s philosophies, policies and procedures relating to corporate finance / banking activities.
To ensure that all business activities are in full compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, including Anti-Money Laundering policies, and the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies as communicated by SMBCCB’s Compliance Department.
To assist the Managing Director in the achievement of budget targets, the deepening of client relationships, the management of the assigned credit portfolio, and the effective marketing of the Bank’s products and services through an in-depth understanding of the industries in which a client operates.
This position will provide day to day backup support to the Managing Director and occasional support to other marketing units to meet deadlines, support marketing initiatives or other extraordinary events.
To perform thorough investigations and exercise sound judgment in analyzing and assessing the risks associated with the Bank’s investments and to constantly adhere to the proper application of the Bank’s credit granting policies and procedures.
To prepare timely and accurate credit applications for new customers, renewals of existing customers and amendments to existing loan agreements, including preparation of related financial models and stress testing of those models, analyses of customer’s financial information and industry conditions.
To assist with the preparation of budgets and account plans for future business and prepare other analyses or reports as required by the Managing Director.
To ensure astute management of the Bank’s credit portfolio through regular review of assigned credit files, careful review and control of documentation and security and ongoing monitoring and reporting of asset quality.
This will include the ongoing monitoring of the assigned credit portfolio including the monitoring of revenue streams, asset size and other performance measurements as required.
To cultivate and maintain productive account relationships for the existing client portfolio and to handle and report to the Managing Director complaints from customers, if any, in a highly responsive manner.
To contribute to the achievement of the Bank’s business growth, ancillary revenue and profitability targets through coordination and collaboration with other units of the bank and through effective control of asset quality.
To coordinate internal and / or external legal counsels on legal documentation review, and clients to complete the KYC process.
To take the appropriate actions in identifying, monitoring and working-out special credit accounts and looking after the divestiture or the collection process if necessary.
To attend business meetings and client-related social functions as the Bank’s representative to promote the business image of the Bank.
To provide necessary support and assistance to other affiliates in promoting global relationships with selected customers.
To perform other ad-hoc business related requests as required by the Managing Director.
University degree in Business or Economics. A post graduate degree MBA, CPA, CFA. preferred.
5+ years previous banking experience, primarily in corporate finance / banking, portfolio management.
Strong reasoning ability; understand complex situations, people and systems needs against backdrop of an ever-changing regulatory environment;
Able to learn quickly and dissect complicated issues within a large financial institution
Knowledge and understanding of Japanese culture and foreign banks in general are desirable
