The ideal candidate does not require a legal background or education.As a Senior specialist, business law, your primary role is to execute and support all functions (administration, bookkeeping, client relations) of the Canadian Claimants Group (CCG), which operates like a small business tasked with claiming cable retransmission royalties paid by American cable systems for the distant retransmission of distant free-over-the-air Canadian broadcast signals in the northern United States.

Working as part of a small team, you will communicate regularly with external clients (producers / syndicators, distributors, broadcasters, third party representatives) and suppliers (bank, external lawyers), and support them across complex tasks and sophisticated issues.

You will file an annual claim for U.S. cable retransmission royalties on behalf of CBC and others. You will create, develop and maintain detailed records of all transactions relating to the CCG (banking / bookkeeping, communications, procedures, and distributions) in compliance with accounting principles, departmental and industry practices.

You will routinely deal with external lawyers in different proceedings. You will support existing member relations and pursue potential members.

You will also fulfil responsibilities pertinent to CBC’s affiliation with other national and international collectives, and research new rights revenue opportunities.

Additionally, you will perform administrative tasks to support the team and its role within the CBC.Below are the challenges you will need to meet during your first six (6) months on the job :

  • Create and maintain cordial relationships with CCG members and cultivate their confidence.
  • Learn about international copyright collective societies and related laws, and Canadian productions.
  • Learn to use custom software, and unique processes relating to administration of the CCG.
  • Understand the organization and the industry it operates in.
  • Qualifications

    We are looking for a candidate with the following :

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Communications, Business Administration, or equivalent experience; 5 or more years of experience in a similar role.
  • High level of proficiency with various software custom and Microsoft Office Programs (particularly Excel and Access), SAP and Quickbooks.
  • Advanced organizational skills with respect to creating and maintaining records.
  • Experience, or an interest, in television production finances and accounting / bookkeeping.
  • Strong research and data analysis skills.
  • High level of confidentiality.
  • Effective trouble-shooting and sound decision-making abilities.
  • Strong inter-personal skills with a heightened sense of customer service.
  • Flexible, eager, resourceful, ready for a challenge.
  • Bilingual (English & French).
  • As much of the work is with suppliers based in the United States, superior ability in English is particularly important.
  • Able to multi-task and to handle stress.
  • A superior communicator (written and oral), able to read, comprehend, and then clearly and precisely explain lengthy and complex, English legal documents and copyright legislation.
  • Able to travel occasionally Toronto, Montreal, Washington D.C.
  • Regulations pertaining to the retransmission of broadcast stations, compulsory copyright licenses, and other related matters, helpful knowledge.
  • Canadian broadcast programming, helpful knowledge.
  • Independent television production sector, helpful knowledge.
  • International secondary rights collective societies, helpful knowledge.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
