Job Description and Qualifications

Air Products Canada has an opportunity for a Project Engineering Manager. Air Products Canada Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Air Products and Chemicals Inc.

has manufacturing and distribution operations in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta. Air Products (NYSE : APD) core industrial gas business provides atmospheric and process gases serving a variety of customers in 50+ countries, including refining, chemical, gasification, metals, electronics, manufacturing, food and beverage, welding, and healthcare.

Purpose :

In this multi-functional role, you will lead engineering and design activities of complex, sophisticated mega capital projects that Air Products is developing in a number of new technologies.

The Project Engineering Manager will be accountable for the overall engineering execution quality, scope and schedule. The Engineering Manager will facilitate the successful completion of the engineering work, including engaging multiple Air Products execution centers around the world, potentially engaging with 3rd party Engineering firms, and lead a portion of the overall Engineering team during the course of project development through to Construction and startup in Canada.

Nature and Scope :

The incumbent will be directly engaged with Project Management, Construction Management, Supply Chain Management and third-party engineering key partners in ensuring that Engineering is fully integrated into the overall plan and schedule for the project.

In addition to leading the Engineering team, the incumbent will review and assess performance against the project’s engineering schedule, and handle changes that may impact the scope, budget, or schedule of a project.

Long lead time and capital investments ranging from $300 MM to $1,500MM

Principal accountabilities

  • Develop overall Engineering and Design Execution Strategy to support project goals.
  • Provide key inputs to the Project Execution Strategies (Modularization, Procurement and Contracting, Construction Pkg, etc.
  • and make strategic decisions that affect the functional engineering areas of responsibility.

  • Develop designs for the entire project leading to quantity take offs in support of the major estimates to be prepared.
  • Be a critical member of the project leadership team along with the Project Manager, the Procurement Manager, Contracts Manager, and Construction Manager.
  • Lead the engineering aspect of project initiation activities and collaborate with the Project Manager on overall activities.
  • Ensure technical stewardship of engineering activities
  • Ensure alignment of engineering activities with the Procurement and Contracts Plan, and the Project Construction Plan.
  • Develop and ensure functional understanding of regional and multicenter scope splits between FEED and Detailed Engineering Design phases.
  • Facilitate comprehensive engineering designs by ensuring alignment between groups.
  • Direct internal and external resources to produce deliverables on schedule and on budget, monitoring progress and performance.
  • Empower the project team to meet critical goals.
  • Ensure effective technical coordination with clients and third-party representatives.
  • Resolve issues arising from resource constraints.
  • Job requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering.
  • Registered with the OIQ
  • Ability to work a flexible time shifted schedule that may require EST alignment.
  • Experience working in an Owner organization with self-perform EPC
  • Minimum 15 years relevant professional experience.
  • Proven track record in the management of basic and detailed engineering activities of very large process plants.
  • Strong organizational, communication and facilitation skills.
  • Fully bilingual (French / English) written and spoken
  • Ability to facilitate change in an organization to achieve project targets and goals. Good commercial awareness with ability to manage change.
  • Strong knowledge of local Quebec and Canadian codes, Building Codes, OIQ regulations, and fire codes.
  • Experience directly coordinate or assist in the following engineering and design deliverables and activities :
  • Cooling water tower designs
  • Cooling water deep undergrounds
  • Firewater systems and firewater loops
  • Process Flow Diagram
  • Materials of Construction Review
  • Plot Plan Review
  • HAZID & HAZOP Close-Out
  • P&ID Reviews (operability, reliability, scope completeness)
  • Assist in risk management
  • Requisition Planning
  • Equipment specifications for Procurement
  • Critical Quantity Management
  • Familiarity with SAP, and Ecosys
  • Familiarity with P6 scheduling
  • Equipment criticality rating
  • Developing requirements for 3rd party engineering for part of the scope
  • Managing 3rd party engineering contractors
  • Interface management
  • Inspection Test Plans
  • Vendor Document integration into overall design
  • Plant Design & Model Reviews (30%, 60% and 90% model review) SmartPlant is the primary design tool and navigating the model is preferred
  • Module Packages and all critical equipment Packages
  • Construction execution planning and backwards support planning to support path of construction
  • Familiarity with producing the contents of fabrication and construction packages : Piling and Foundation Design,Civil Design (Underground drainage, buildings, road, fencing, etc.
  • Shop-fabricated Pipe and Steel,Mechanical Design (Pipe & Structural steel),

    Electrical & Instrument Design,

    Insulation & Painting, etc.

  • Managing RFI and drive to conclusion
  • PHYSICAL DEMAND to :

  • Considerable amount of driving
  • Up to 50% travel.
  • This role will start as home based but will move to a hybrid model of sitting with a small group of the execution team in an office in Quebec.
  • Travel to the site, Engineering office in Quebec, travel to U.S. sites including our headquarters in Pennsylvania, Houston, and Detail Engineering Centers located in Pune, India and Vadadora, India.
  • You will report into a Project Engineering Manager in Allentown.
