DUTIES

Thompson Rivers University Library is seeking a creative, collaborative and thoughtful strategic leader for a four (4) year term in the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL), with a possibility of 1 renewal.

The AUL will work in a dynamic and unique university setting, reporting to and working with the University Librarian to foster a culture of collaboration, support open and transparent communication, and foster innovative library services for the community in which we serve.

The AUL supports, mentors and develops library staff, guides the organizational development, fosters a high caliber service oriented culture, while contributing to budget planning, financial stewardship, resource allocation, space utilization and service development.

The AUL may serve as the acting University Librarian on occasion.

The AUL will be a key member of the library’s senior management team and provide library wide leadership in the following areas :

Strategic leadership and planning :

  • Shared accountability for the library’s academic mission, strategic direction, and vision
  • Participate in setting direction for the library through collaborative leadership and inclusive planning processes
  • Lead the development of multiyear and annual operational plans
  • Ensure transparency in communication of the University Library and University direction, decisions and impacts
  • Operational effectiveness :

  • Ensure effective implementation of new services, information technologies, and the optimal allocation of resources
  • Apply change management strategies to ensure effective implementation of changes and helping others to successfully manage change
  • Serves a role in staff performance, as per respective collective agreements
  • Identify opportunities for operational effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement in University Library functions, services and resources
  • Assisting the University Librarian in the development and implement of policies, procedures and key success measures for the University Library
  • People and Working Environment :

  • Support and maintain a working environment that embraces diversity among all library employees in order to contribute to an inclusive library experience for students, faculty, staff and community users
  • Oversee the staff development, recruitment activities, and promote professional growth, development, and leadership opportunities for others including direct reports, staff, and peers
  • Contribute to building a robust and balanced leadership team
  • Practice and promote strong performance management and standards throughout the organization
  • Relationships and Communications :

  • Foster relationships on campus and in the wider community to support outreach and engagement in pursuit of effective partnerships
  • Consult and communicate on policy and budgetary matters, and provide information on decisions and outcomes
  • Participate in service to the community, to the profession, and to the professional associations by sharing expertise and knowledge
  • Seek collaborations and partnerships across the Library, the University, and consortial and other community partners
  • Ensure representation of the library at campus, regional and national committees as appropriate
  • Financial and Resource Management :

  • Participate in developing the library’s annual budget submission and contribute to financial stewardship
  • Develop creative and effective solutions to resource challenges (e.g. financial, human, IT, space, and facilities resources)
  • Ensure a strategic and efficient distribution and / or use of resources across the library
  • Communicate and ensure compliance with university policies, collective agreements, and federal and provincial laws and regulations
  • Essential qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS), Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a professional librarian demonstrating increasing levels of responsibilities, including leadership and / or management experience, preferably in a unionized workplace
  • Knowledge of strategic trends impacting academic libraries
  • Understanding of the broader university governance context
  • Effective oral and written communication
  • Highly collaborative and collegial, with the ability to participate in shared decision making
  • Demonstrated ability to promote positive and respectful organizational culture, including the ability to engage, empower, and motivate people
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective change strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate and promote library value
  • Demonstrated intercultural awareness
