Director, Operations West Position Overview The incumbent is accountable for ensuring construction activities and costs are effectively managed such that performance and profitability targets are achieved.

Ensures Aecon’s contractual obligations are met. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategy to grow and enhance the Urban Transportation Systems capabilities in the West in coordination with the Civil West operating sector, in support of operational excellence
  • Accountable for leading strategic business development activities, formulating solutions to address customer challenges while also pursuing new lines of business and opportunities with new and existing clients with special emphasis on the systems side
  • Responsible for the overall planning and scheduling to ensure that projects are constructed in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner
  • Support in the negotiation of agreements with designers, subcontractors and suppliers and ensure that all the systems requirements are captured
  • Support in the elaboration of the Risks Matrix of the project, prepare mitigation measures and track the implementation of opportunities,
  • Responsible for the leadership, management, people development and training of their team
  • Ensure all Operations are adequately staffed with the appropriate resources
  • Accountable for the development and execution of the annual business plan within the assigned business unit
  • Implement procedures and organizational structure
  • Assist in the establishment and ensure compliance of operational short-term and long-term goals with the overall corporate objectives
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other divisions in establishing and carrying out responsibilities of One Aecon projects
  • Lead, coach, develop and appraise the performance of staff and provide the necessary coordination between activities
  • Influence, motivate and inform employees about the company / business unit plans and progress
  • Participate in the development of long-term strategy for UTS Required Knowledge & Skills
  • Two to three years rail construction experience
  • Two to three years’ experience building and managing a team
  • Two to three years’ experience managing multiple large scale projects simultaneously on the transit, rail and systems field
  • Previous business development and project management experience overseeing projects of varying size and complexity
  • Two to three years Systems Engineering, Systems Design, Systems Implementation and Systems Integration and Testing and Commissioning experience on multidisciplinary complex projects
  • Previous experience in assessing and negotiating contracts
  • Previous experience managing the operational and financial performance of a business unit
  • Strong connections and relationships with the local markets
  • Results oriented with the ability to balance other work considerations
  • Strong professional presence in the industry with clients
  • Highly developed communication skills, both written and oral with the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients, public officials, team, peers and the general public
  • Good understanding of accounting principles
  • Strong understanding of the drivers in the construction industry in Canada (i.e business trends, regulatory, economic, and political)
  • Knowledge of the Company’s established guidelines, procedures and practices would be an asset
  • Proven problem solving and negotiating skills
  • Proven credibility demonstrated hands-on attitude
  • Excellent Computer skills including proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with the client, field personnel and subcontractors;
  • Strong awareness and understanding of construction safety principles.

  • $160,000 to $220,000 annually
  • Work 37.5 hours / week
