Fort McKay Group of Companies is comprised of two primary limited partnerships : Fort McKay Strategic Services and Fort McKay Logistics LP and are the majority owner of Rising Sun Services and Birch Mountain Enterprises both being joint venture partnership.

Fully owned by Fort McKay First Nation, Fort McKay Group of Companies (FMGOC) began in 1986 with six employees and a single janitorial contract.

Since then, we have aggressively taken advantage of our close proximity to the oil sands, establishing companies that provide both revenue and opportunity to our community.

We currently have over 1400 employees and have offices located in Edmonton and the Fort McKay Industrial Park, 48 km north of Fort McMurray.

With a strong commitment and priority focus on quality, cost, and safety, FMGOC has grown into a multi-million-dollar oilfield construction and services company.

Profits generated from FMGOC flow back into the Fort McKay First Nation community to support community employment, infrastructure, health benefits and community centres to meet the needs of its growing population.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Human Resources Manager reports directly to the Director of Corporate Services and leads the HR with a large portion reporting through an HR Business Partner.

Reporting to the HR Business Partner are three Recruiters, two HR Generalist that provide coverage to benefits administration, recruitment assistance and reception and one part time resource providing filing administration.

The broader team includes an additional HR Business Partner and Indigenous Relations Advisor.

This role originates, develops and leads Human Resources practices and objectives that will provide an employee-oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, quality, productivity and standards, goal attainment and the recruitment and ongoing development of a superior workforce.

The role coordinates the implementation of services, policies, and programs through Human Resources staff and assists and advises company managers about Human Resources issues.

The role is to conduct all activities in a manner that supports the mission, the vision and the values of the Fort McKay Group of Companies LP including a strong Diversity Employment Strategy with a focus on Indigenous content.

Dimensions of this role include an organization providing significant contracted labour services to clients operating under multiple collective agreements.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the resolution of specific policy-related and procedural issues and inquires by providing advice, assistance, follow-up and documentation
  • Plan, advise and assist departmental managers on HR requirements and matters
  • Perform specific research / investigation into operational issues, as needed
  • Support and lead the transformation and use of the human resource databases & technical systems
  • Ensure appropriate records management and privacy governance standards in place for manual & electronic filing systems in support of legislative requirements for employee records
  • Work with the Director of Corporate Services, managers and HR staff to develop HR strategies and programs that address the organization's needs and strategic plans
  • Plan, develop, implement and evaluate personnel and labour relations strategies including policies, programs and procedures to address the organization's human resource requirements
  • Work with Health, Safety and Environment Manager to develop and implement employee wellness and workplace safety programs
  • Ensure compliance with employment legislation
  • Assist with labour relations and in preparing, researching and negotiating collective agreements
  • Provide timely, accurate and thorough performance and appraisal reviews for supervised employees
  • Ensure accurate reports for month end reviews with upper management are delivered on time and includes manpower and workforce trend data and analytics
  • Provide pragmatic and consistent guidance and advice to managers on grievances, attendance, disciplinary and performance issues
  • Raise proactive issues with managers, identify practical solutions to complex and diverse HR issues and recommend appropriate action plans
  • Review and make recommendations on revisions of HR Policies in compliance with changing or new legislation
  • Other HR related activities as may be required
  • QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and education in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development
  • CPHR designation an asset
  • 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions
  • Specialized training in employment law, compensation, organizational planning, organization, development, employee relations, safety, training, and preventive labour relations, preferred
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Outstanding interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching, mentoring and management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop staff members in previous roles
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment
  • Experience in the administration of benefits and compensation programs and other Human Resources recognition and engagement programs and processes
  • Evidence of the ability to practice and coach organization managers in the practice of a high level of confidentiality
  • Excellent organizational leadership skills
