This opportunity relates to construction of new infrastructure under a Joint Venture Partnership with another leading Contractor.
The HS&E Manager will be located at a project site office located Ottawa, Ontario. The position reports into Corporate HS&E functionally and to the Project Director.
Their primary focus is to oversee multiple workplaces on this Project to ensure compliance with company, client, and government policies, procedures, acts and regulations.
The HS&E Manager will ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald Health, Safety and Environment Management System.
This position will demonstrate leadership in order to drive safety as a core value.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to :
Provide professional Health & Safety expertise utilizing the Black & McDonald Safety Management System
Promote a management culture that recognizes the interdependence of environment, health, safety, quality and production
Provide active leadership direction and guidance to the Health & Safety departments and Black & McDonald’s management team
Effective implementation of the hazard / risk assessment process
Assist site management in leading and coaching the workforce through safety and loss control techniques
Ensure incidents are recognized, investigated, analyzed and reported in a timely / valued manner
Provide measures of loss and risk management improvement through incident-trend analyses, benchmarking and predictable forecasting of performance, relative to the annual business goals
Maintain current knowledge of legislative changes, and industry trends and practices regarding Health, Safety & Environment
Oversee and manage the Return to Work and WSIB Claims Management processes
Responsible for the staff selection, training, development and performance of the Health, Safety & Environment personnel
Coordinate Health & Safety Advisors activity and ensure that the duties, responsibilities and authority are clearly defined
Assist, advise and coach organization and staff with;
o Hazard identification and control
o Inspections
o Investigations
o Reports
o Orientations
o Training requirements
o Project Safety Plans
o Project Hazard Assessments & Environmental Assessments

Degree or Diploma in
Health & Safety Management
The following certifications / designations are considered an asset
National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO)
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
Construction Safety Training, First Aid & CPR & any additional safety certifications
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
5+ years of related work experience in Construction Industrial industry as a Safety Manager
5+ years’ experience working in the field as well as in a corporate setting
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Advanced knowledge and understanding of :
A strong communicator, both in writing and spoken communications
Articulate and confident standing up and delivering to large audiences
Organized, a self-starter and an inspirational leader of your team
Managing / leading union and nonunion staff
Intermediate user of :
MS Office (Word, Excel, Project and Outlook)
Valid Driver’s License (with a clean abstract)
