Position Details (What is this?)

The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works.

  • As such, the department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services;
  • management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers;
  • and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.


    This is skilled work in the safe operation of a variety of heavy equipment used in highway maintenance work. The incumbent will be required to operate heavy equipment such as a tandem truck, front-

  • end-loader, backhoe, etc.; perform pre and post trip inspections of equipment; prepare and maintain work records on the operation of assigned equipment;
  • in winter - plow, sand and salt roads; perform preventative maintenance functions and non-complex servicing; participate in training, as required;
  • interacts with the general public and perform other related duties as required.


    Merit Criteria (What is this?)

  • Experience with maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment
  • Screening Criteria

  • Completion of High School. Equivalencies will be considered
  • Possession of the appropriate operator’s licenses as issued by the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements)
  • Clearly demonstrate the ability to report to the Lumsden Depot within one half hour of notification of after-duty call
  • Knowledge of maintenance and practices utilized in the operation of heavy equipment

  • Valid Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Class 03 license with 08 and 09 endorsements

  • Recent driver’s abstract satisfactory to the employer
  • Applicants are advised that positions will be of variable duration and terminate on or before March 31, 2019, subject to possibility of extension

  • This position is casual call-in
  • Overtime may be required, on short notice
  • Practical heavy equipment testing will be administered prior to interview
