The Whiteshell Closure Project (WCP) is an initiative under Canadian Nuclear Laboratories whose focus is to decommission the site.

The Project mandate encompasses the entire Whiteshell Laboratories (WL) Site, including nuclear equipment and systems, buildings and plant infrastructure, services, waste management facilities and affected lands.

The Project scope includes all elements necessary to complete by 2024, a major remediation project on a licensed nuclear site, including strategic planning, resourcing, project annual budgeting and planning, nuclear facility operation, nuclear facility decommissioning, remediation of affected lands, environmental monitoring, site services, application of nuclear programs and business services as required.

INTRO

This position provides support to the Sample Management Office (SMO) in the WL Environmental Management Branch. It is essential to ensure that preparation for sampling campaigns conducted in support of WL site operations, WL environmental monitoring, and WL decommissioning activities is conducted in a timely and efficient manner and that samples collected are dispositioned to internal and external analytical laboratories in accordance with established WL Sample Management Office and CNL procedures.

This position requires the ability to diagnose and correct minor problems with sample receipt and packing for shipment, under appropriate supervision.

Additionally, the position requires the ability to diagnose equipment / instrument faults, to correct minor problems and to direct more serious repairs.

He / she also needs to be able to select and apply appropriate procedures to satisfy the needs of customers, and to seek advice when there is doubt.

Ability to review submitted documentation for accuracy and compliance is required. Sound decision-making is very important for this position.

DUTIES

  • Employ a rigorous approach to safety through excellent housekeeping and adherence to all applicable CNL safety-related policies and procedures
  • Maintain inventory of materials / supplies / equipment required to support sampling campaigns
  • Receive and inspect materials / supplies / equipment to ensure they meet applicable quality standards and acceptability for deployment for sampling campaigns
  • Prepare and maintain sampling packages required for various sampling campaigns
  • Receive and inspect samples, prepare samples for shipment to assigned laboratory
  • Ensure samples are properly documented and are subsampled, preserved, and directed to the appropriate laboratory, as required
  • Maintain an electronic sample log-in system and enter sample data into electronic records
  • Prepare shipping documents and enlist the assistance of the WL RAM / TDG shipper when required, maintain records

  • Document SMO work, processes and results in a clear and concise manner and in accordance with applicable procedures / protocols and applicable standards
  • Monitor and record the condition of SMO equipment he / she uses and advise the senior Sample Management Officer & Analyst on maintenance schedule / concerns.
  • Operate, calibrate, monitor, and maintain equipment / instruments he / she is assigned
  • Prepare and manage SMO electronic and hard-copy records
  • Provide training to other staff, as required
  • Participate in all required workplace inspections and audits
  • Undertake cross-training to provide support to WL Environmental Protection Program, as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • 1. Education

  • Secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent from an institution of recognized standing
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant Science field would be an asset
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and / or training
  • Previous environmental monitoring and / or sample management experience would be an asset
  • 2 . Experience

  • Some lab experience would be an asset
  • Some fieldwork experience would be an asset
  • Experience with Quality Control / Quality Assurance principles and applications
  • 3. Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy packages of 10-20 kgs and be physically capable of carrying out sample package preparation, sample handling and packaging activities
  • The position requires efficient and thoughtful execution of assigned work including meticulous housekeeping and in applying procedures properly to all customer samples
  • He / she must be helpful and cooperative in answering questions and willing to check work / results whenever they are questioned
  • The position requires the ability to work in an office, laboratory, or field environment
  • He / she must be physically capable of carrying out sample handling and packaging activities
  • He / she must be prepared, trained, and able to recognize and work with a variety of hazardous materials
  • Mental / visual concentration is required for reviewing and completing documentation and procedures, reports, analyzing information, and planning
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of software such as Excel, Word, and Access
  • Ability to remain focused and organized in fast-paced environments
  • Planning, organizational, and prioritization skills
  • The position requires the ability to work in an office, laboratory, or field environment
  • The position can experience periods of time with high-pressure work situations, and the ability to maintain calm under pressure is essential
  • Knowledge of QA / QC principles and applications would be an asset
