The Opportunity - Principal Software Engineer (Cloud Infrastructure - GCP)
We’re looking for a strong technical leader who has gravitas to influence and has deep knowledge of building and designing a robust and scalable cloud infrastructure for SaaS products.
An effective communicator, a mentor who can think on their feet and be able to come up with practical, simple solutions to complex problems.
As a Principal Software Engineer, you are someone who can redefine engineering capability and constantly push boundaries.
You will be owning FreshBooks’ cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability and elasticity.

What you'll do in your first twelve months at FreshBooks :
Collaborate on cross-functional Product teams working on features for our customers.
Advocate best practices, contribution to roadmaps, domain breadth and / or depth, stewardship, mentoring others.
Define and communicate technical vision and challenge across different levels of business including Senior Executives and Senior Leadership group.
Help in growing the technical expertise of the team as they continue to work and touch services outside their realm.
Demonstrate experience coaching and mentoring technical teams, and growing the overall technical maturity of our Engineering organization.
Evolve our technical architecture to scale with our rapidly growing customer community.
Develop a deep understanding of multiple parts of our stack as well as the processes and technologies relevant to our tech space.
Be capable of supporting the product from end to end.
Raise the bar for our entire engineering team through best practices, automation, documentation, and hiring
Level up our operational excellence, and drive our team to maintain it, so that common regressions are root caused.
Support operational excellence and make measurable improvements to our support processes.
Lead and own in technical discussions to aid overall cloud roadmap and system design.
Help engineering teams to develop, test, debug and release scalable, resilient and high available cloud-native applications quickly.
What you Bring :
Experience in designing, architecting and operating in the cloud infrastructure in support of a SaaS platform.
You have a deep understanding of Cloud computing concepts and solutions. Bonus points for direct experience in GCP or Kubernetes.
You have a good understanding of Cloud Security, specifically IAM Roles & Policies, Security Groups and Encryption keys.
You have demonstrated experience supporting at least one of the predominant public clouds (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Experience in leading the definition and implementation of technology governance activities (e.g., reference architecture, standards and guidelines) to ensure that project teams adhere to industry best practices.
Experience with some or all of : web network protocols, security, persistence solutions, RabbitMQ, Celery, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Kubernetes, Docker, Elasticsearch, Terraform and similar technologies.
Experience in researching / monitoring industry trends / technologies and recommends technology direction.
You have experience working with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as CloudFormation, Cloud Deployment Manager.
What you might bring :
You have exposure or familiarity to Linux Operating system administration and a good understanding of Linux fundamentals like signals, scheduling, filesystems
You have strong TCP / IP networking knowledge in either cloud or on-prem deployments : DNS, network, routing, L3 / L7 protocols etc.
You are available after hours for planned activities as required.
Extensive experience with influencing and developing a DevOps culture across an organization.
Project management experience, especially using Scrum or Kanban processes.
Very Strong problem solving & troubleshooting skills including ability to perform root cause analysis and preventative analysis.
It’s a bonus if you have :
You have experience in building systems in a microservice environment. Understanding the basic building blocks of a resilient and scalable software
Experience with web applications developed in Python or Ruby.
A degree in Computer Science / Engineering or Information Technology.
