Job summary

Operational Excellence Manager will partner with the General Manager to liaise and work with various Mill departments to lead and coordinate cost reduction initiatives, improve productivity and increase customer satisfaction.

The Operational Excellence Manager will identify training needs to increase awareness of continuous improvement and drive our Pathway to Performance Excellence Program (MBOS), resulting in improved processes and customer satisfaction, cost savings, and company growth.

Responsible for, and aligned with CEO Office, instilling MBOS culture, mindset and performance through the increased capture of idea generation using tools such as brainstorming and cross sharing opportunities.

In order to achieve these goals, the Manager will be required to review project registration, progress, and results, confirm scope, determine resource needs, and supervise the efforts of team members.

Ensure project deliverables, effective quality control, and clear communication of expectations to stakeholders and reporting to management are critical tasks that must be performed throughout each project's lifecycle.

Responsibilities : General Management :

General Management :

  • As a member of the Mill Management Team, participates in the leadership of the overall business of the mill
  • Overtime or weekend work may be required
  • Exposure to hazards associated with the pulp and paper manufacturing
  • Adhere to all mill and corporate and safety rules and regulations
  • MBOS Performance Management :

  • Assist members of the mill management group with organizing and tracking clear KPI’s annually / monthly
  • The performance management resource for site General Manager and the management group
  • Ensure all reporting is complete for implementation of KPIs, SDAs and other performance tracking as per the MBOS Calendar
  • Ensure direct communication with CEO Corporate Office for the delivery of MBOS Performance Management within the Mill
  • Maintain a current knowledge of mill project activities
  • Assists the management group with initiating improvement projects / SDAs, registering those projects and tracking for monthly BR presentations
  • Provide guidance to project teams and on continuous improvement initiatives
  • Provide leadership and guidance; answer any inquiries from staff members
  • Strategic & Operational Leadership :

  • Manage and lead the Talent Development Resource Team, allocate
  • and assign improvement projects to team members
  • Lead and complete projects as assigned by General Manager & CEO Office
  • Use influence to drive change and promote improvement, both direct and indirect
  • Driven to work with stakeholders from the shop floor to the top floor
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with local, national, and international standards and legislation.
  • Plan all project timelines, milestones, deliverables, using the appropriate software tools and / or project management methods
  • Experience in training, coaching, mentoring and facilitation
  • Establish and deliver mechanisms for tracking project progress and reporting to management through formal communications plan
  • Establish, implement, and follow a formal change management program when required
  • Produce regular reports (status, escalations, etc.) on the progress of projects; deliver these reports during regular meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Financial Management :

  • Develops departmental budgets, prioritizes spending, and advises senior management on cost over-runs and extraordinary equipment requisitions
  • Ensures department cost statements are effectively utilized and analyzed at all levels of the department
  • Identifies and justifies projects for reducing costs, improving quality and increasing production
  • Cross Sharing :

  • Lead Brainstorming Opportunities
  • Conduct, review and evaluate projects for use at other mills
  • Compliance and Support :

  • Aware of environmental responsibilities and maintains compliance
  • Analyze departmental workings, determining areas of improvement in quality standards, assurance, productivity and efficiency
  • Present ideas and plans for continuous improvement, providing data and / or metrics to support the initiatives
  • Schedule meetings and gain the support of supervisors and managers prior to the implementation of new or changed procedures
  • Support organizational goals and continuous improvement by integrating tools (e.g. Lean, 5 S, Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc.) into processes
  • Qualifications :

  • University degree in engineering or related post-secondary education
  • Minimum (10) years' experience in pulp and paper manufacturing
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • Ability to produce succinct reports / presentations to communicate the status of assigned projects / tasks
  • Strong leadership abilities; able to lead effective teams, projects and meetings
  • Quality control background, including problem solving and root cause analysis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated diplomacy and professionalism
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work with little supervision, be self-directed with metric reporting structure to PE CEO Office
  • Training and knowledge of Six Sigma techniques, Kaizen, and Lean Manufacturing are desirable
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 systems are an asset
  • Highly motivated and self-directed, capable of multi-tasking, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to interface directly with cross functional teams
  • Ability to create and review technical documentation, including project plans, test procedures, and design documents
  • Able to develop, review, and maintain metrics and audits
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution
