BCIT’s Facilities and Campus Development department is seeking a temporary full-time (1.0 FTE) Recycling & Maintenance Person .
This position is required to operate Institute vehicles for the safe and efficient handling, delivery, storage and distribution of recyclables and recycling equipment throughout the Institute campus and Lower Mainland sites.
This position provides recycling information and assistance to various departments throughout the campus, conducts grounds cleanup (including removal of debris, emptying and maintenance of trash receptacles), landscape maintenance, cleanup of roadways, breezeways, and all public areas on campus, and assists tradespersons and other facilities staff in carrying out planned and emergency maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, buildings, grounds, creek and ponds.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
Transports, distributes, collects and stores recyclables and recycling equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Ensures that work orders are completed in a timely fashion as described by the Facilities and Campus Development Department.
Follows up on work orders regarding pick up and delivery of goods. Maintains records or material processed on an ongoing basis.
Handles the collection and storage of recycled paper from various storage locations. This includes various pickups and deliveries of large items or high volumes of recycled paper.
Handles the collection of batteries, printer cartridges, fluorescent tubes and other types of building materials.
Handles the collection and storage of recyclable material, soft plastics, and Styrofoam from containers and storage locations throughout campus.
Sorts recycling material as required prior to providing for external recycling operators. This includes sorting through received goods to prevent contaminated products being shipped.
Handles the collection and storage of aluminum pop cans, glass and plastic material from various containers and storage locations.
Participates in landscape softscape and hardscape projects.
Assists trades persons and other Facilities staff in carrying out planned and emergency maintenance and repair of grounds, landscapes, creek, buildings and repair of equipment and machinery.
Inspects and cleans various recycling and custodial equipment and related facilities both within buildings and on the exterior of BCIT locations;
takes action to report and correct deficiencies.
Operates Institute vehicles within the Lower Mainland. Ensures that vehicles are clean, performs pre-trip safety inspections and reports on any mechanical malfunctions.
Performs a variety of duties relating to building and grounds maintenance, including general grounds cleanup, attending to hazardous winter conditions and physical hazards, removing snow and salting.
Prepares and paints gas meters, fire hydrants, hand railings and other external structures.
Liaises with other tradesmen to provide quality customer service to BCIT’s internal and external clients.
Pressure washes grounds and building exteriors, including creating safe plans to work on uneven surfaces and / or in tight conditions.
Lubricates, greases and performs minor service on grounds keeping equipment.
Cleans and maintains drainage facilities and maintains ponds, creek and weir to clear and safe conditions including responding to trouble calls, relocates animals and birds in cases of misadventure.
Performs work orders, conducts preventative maintenance schedules at various locations throughout campus.
Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade for this position.

Completion of secondary school education, i.e. Grade 12.
Must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
Must have successfully completed WHMIS, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Mobile Equipment Operators Operator (Forklift) certificate programs within six months of employment and be responsible for ensuring certifications and licenses are current and up to date.
Two years’ general experience, plus up to six months’ practical current experience on a similar or related job.
Must be familiar and comfortable operating a 5-ton delivery truck, UTV, skid-steer loader, ATV pickup truck, golf cart, fork lift, and scissor lift.
Possess well-developed driving skills and have general safety and first aid knowledge.
Basic Microsoft Office knowledge, email and internet.
Good communication and interpersonal skills; must be a team player and provide excellent customer service.
Must be able to prioritize daily duties.
Road knowledge of Greater Vancouver and Lower Mainland area.
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects of up to 50 lbs without the aid of a hydraulic lift or hand truck.
Good mechanical ability and ability to work with minimal supervision.
