ROLE OVERVIEW Please note : This position is a Full-Time contract role (35h / week) for an 8-week duration, with a start date of 10 June 2019 and end date of 2 August 2019.

Ocean Wise & the Ocean Wise Seafood Program KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Assisting in the coordination and support of events by :

  • Coordinating a minimum of two public outreach events in Toronto to raise the profile of the organization and conduct consumer-
  • facing education on sustainable seafood;
  • Planning and implementating the events, including logistics and publicity;
  • Managing volunteer presence at the events;
  • Public speaking and community outreach;
  • Supporting the coordination of Ocean Wise participation in high-profile events in May and June;
  • Supporting the creation of social media messaging and developing website content, as well as writing about relevant marine conservation issues for the Ocean Wise Aquablog website;
  • Engaging with Ocean Wise Partners by :

  • Participating in Ocean Wise partner staff training events throughout the city, where requested
  • Attending meetings and consultations with current and potential Ocean Wise partners
  • Email and phone correspondences with restaurant, retail and supplier partners to provide materials, information and support;
  • Assisting with program research and partner surveys by :

  • Performing basic descriptive analysis of partnership data on Salesforce to identify partner characteristics, activity and trends within Eastern Canada;
  • Completing a research report including the descriptive analysis and assessment of potential opportunities for new partners, with a focus on Eastern Canada;
  • Developing, conducting and summarizing results for a small-scale Ocean Wise partner feedback survey to increase understanding and stimulate improvement of partner experience within the program;
  • Conducting phone and in-person interviews with Ocean Wise partners in the restaurant, supplier and retail sectors;
  • Supporting Ocean Wise Seafood Program by :

  • Representing the Ocean Wise seafood program team at networking or public events, where needed;
  • Assisting or shadowing the scientific seafood assessment process conducted for any new or renewing Ocean Wise partners, including the review and research of current fisheries assessments and master list of global seafood recommendations;
  • Attending weekly national program and Toronto office meetings;
  • Supporting or leading other program tasks, where required;
  • Consciously improves the overall organization and its processes by :

  • Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;
  • Maintaining and supporting organizational safety standards;
  • Abiding by all organizational policies and procedures;
  • Performing other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • QUALIFICATIONS This job is funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program. Mandatory requirements are :

  • Between 15 30 years of age
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Returning to full-time studies in September
  • Education and Experience

  • Current post-secondary or graduate student, preferably studying environmental science, marine biology, environmental education, conservation biology, ecology, sustainability, food service & hospitality, or a related field.
  • Those studying business or supply chain management are also encouraged to apply if they are interested in the seafood sector.

  • Experience presenting to small groups and comfortable engaging with the public
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Good customer service skills in person and over the phone
  • Solid understanding of current marine conservation issues, and in particular, overfishing
  • Computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Office suite
  • Passion for ocean conservation and sustainable seafood
  • Demonstrated ability to remain self-motivated
  • Quick learner with a positive attitude
  • Good working knowledge of social media including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram;
  • Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge or experience in fisheries, aquaculture and / or seafood sector
  • Experience using Falcon
  • Experience using Salesforce
  • Experience administering short surveys
  • French language skills
  • Ability to research and analyze data effectively, and produce descriptive reports
