The University of Alberta recently launched its Real World Evidence Unit and is seeking a Project Lead with expertise in real world evidence.

The incumbent will support principal investigators and stakeholders by developing and conducting population-level administrative data-

based research projects across various therapeutic areas, and translate this knowledge to ultimately help physicians and policy makers make more informed health care decisions.

The Real World Evidence Project Lead will physically work within the Real World Evidence (RWE) unit within the Northern Alberta Clinical Trials Research Centre (NACTRC) and report directly to the Director of Clinical Operations and the RWE Academic Lead.


This position is expected to be a senior level position that can work independently without direct technical supervision, but within a collaborative environment.

The individual in this position is expected to lead all activities related to project work with minimal direction / input from the principal investigators.

  • Provides support to the Real World Evidence Unit
  • Champions the development and design of research projects and delivers project management leadership by initiating, conducting, reporting, and providing technical support to ensure successful completion
  • Analyzes, interprets and summarizes complex health data for numerous research projects
  • Develops standardized health information products (e.g., statistical tables as well as descriptive and comparative analysis of population demographics, disease prevalence and trends, health status) to support needs of the Unit
  • Confirms data specifications and facilitates data access
  • Understands data set availability in and outside of the province and identifies opportunities for use of real world evidence and health outcomes research
  • Interprets data; provides context and meaning to data
  • Transforms data into high quality information
  • Summarizes complex data and displays the big picture in an effective manner
  • Creates meaningful, highly-aggregated and easy to understand research reports and presentations of value for all stakeholders (e.
  • g. researchers, knowledge users, partners)

  • Share knowledge through scientific publications, presentations and other knowledge exchange mechanisms
  • Leads project teams to prepare health information / knowledge products
  • Establishes and maintains effective linkages and ongoing communication with internal and external stakeholders, and provides expert advice to strengthen methodology used in health outcomes and real world evidence research studies
  • Functions as a liaison between principle investigators, clinical experts, industry sponsors, regulatory authorities and other stakeholders, and provides status updates, as required, to communicate to the relevant stakeholders
  • Leads virtual research teams and brings subject matter experts together, as required, to collaborate on projects
  • Ensures compliance to project timelines
  • Coordinate appropriate research ethics board applications, approvals, compliance and reporting
  • Acts as a primary contact to sponsors for all project-level communication
  • Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Science (e.g. biostatistics, data science, epidemiology, health informatics, health sciences, public health or health services, or equivalent); Master's preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible-related experience to the analysis of health data, including expertise with data analysis, management, and linking of datasets
  • Understanding of health data assets in Alberta, and knowledge of research design and methodology for administrative health data analysis
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational, problem solving and time management skills;
  • ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Extensive experience facilitating and engaging multisectoral stakeholders and establishing cooperative and collaborative relationships

  • Experience writing research proposals, study protocols and other scientific documents
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
