Rail Control Systems Chief Engineer

Within Canada, our Mass Transit team has been selected to design and deliver most of the recent Greenfield and Brownfield LRT, ALRT and Light Metro jobs awarded in the last 10 years including the Canada Line, Calgary West LRT, Edmonton North LRT, the Evergreen Line and the Confederation Line.

We are actively working on delivering Evergreen (Vancouver), Eglinton-Crosstown (Toronto) and Confederation Line (Ottawa) and have a number of other projects at the proposal stage or awaiting award.

Our Mass Transit Systems teams deliver solutions that include alignment and track, traction power and power distribution, train control and signaling, and communications.

One of the key components of our Automation Systems directorate delivery are the Coms System Design Teams and the Communications and Train Control designs they deliver and integrate with the many facilities and vehicle elements of a modern transit system.

In light of our current and future workloads, our Automation Systems directorate is looking for a RCS Chief Engineer, reporting to the Director, Rail Control Systems.

To perform this role successfully, the individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following :

  • Acting as a Subject Matter Expert supporting the RCS team with projects delivery for various transit communications systems.
  • Assisting the product line directorships supporting all aspects of business development with existing and potential clients.
  • This also includes developing collaborative connections to creating business opportunities with other competing firms and product / service providers.

  • Mentoring and training the growing RCS team to its full potential sharing engineering knowledge, know-how and experience from previous projects and relevant industry best practice;
  • Working with the System Design teams, other Domain teams and the Requirements Management team within the Automation Systems Directorate on specification and delivery of these various Communication Systems into the overall transit, urban rail and heavy freight project solutions.
  • Supporting the R&TE organization for bid works and management of future projects;
  • Interaction with Operations and Maintenance teams and clients
  • Skill & Experience

  • 20+ years’ of experience of Telecoms & Instrumentation / Control systems design life cycle applied to major transit projects;
  • Experienced in applying the Systems Engineering interdisciplinary approach to rail and transit distributed systems within a multi-
  • disciplinary project structure;
  • Strong mentoring, knowledge transfer and team building skills;
  • Strong communication, presentation and reporting skills;
  • Well connected to the major players of the Transit Industry and all relevant governmental agencies with strong business acumen and client management skills;
  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited direct supervision;
  • Able to interact with senior staff as technical lead;
  • Able to adapt to changing circumstances;
  • Able to work from remote, in design office, project office and field environments.
  • Travel :

  • Must be willing to travel to project sites;
  • Must be willing to travel to clients and vendors locations;
  • Must be able to work away from home for short periods of time, on request.
  • Qualifications :

  • Ontario Licenced Professional Engineer;
  • Demonstrated experience in Design, Project and Client management in the Transit Industry;
  • Extensive experience in systems engineering, design, development and installations;
  • Well connected to the market and the transit industry;
  • Expertise in Transit Operations and Planning will be considered valuable.
