Work individually or within a team to perform all aspects of horticulture related work including plant propagation, growing, bed design, layout and installation, maintenance of landscape plantings, pruning, and plant health care.
Work individually or within a team to plan and organize materials, supplies, and equipment to carry out daily job assignments.
Identify and provide recommendations to Supervisor for all supplementary work required to maintain horticulture beds and support community gardens on City lands.
Independently monitor and assess landscaping conditions and identify maintenance based on understanding of levels of service, plant health care and season planting plans.
Operate various types of vehicles and equipment (e.g. tractors, loaders, small power equipment, etc.) as required.
Participate in the winter job pool process which results in winter job duties assignment (e.g. snow plowing, hand shoveling, etc.).
perform required inspections of Community Gardens
Perform other duties as assigned.
Must be reliable with good attitude and employment record.
Must be willing to successfully complete a medical examination if required.
Must successfully complete required progression criteria as it relates to this job title.
Must possess Grade 12 education.
Must have a minimum 2000 hours (1 year) of related experience within the field of Commercial Horticulture or equivalent as determined by the Corporation.
Must have valid MTO driver's license class "DZ" in good standing.
Must possess a Diploma in Horticulture or an approved equivalent certificate in a related field.
Must have Ministry of Environment Landscape or Structural Exterminator License.
Must have proven knowledge and experience of methods and techniques in commercial horticulture relating to greenhouse operations, pruning, fertilizing, cultivation, soil elements, design, layout and planting, interpreting blueprints, and landscape construction.
Must have demonstrated communication skills with a customer service focus and the ability to keep accurate written records.
Must be able to perform a variety of duties including manual labour.
Must be flexible to work varying shifts, weekends, overtime, and winter call outs as required.
