Purpose :

PLEASE NOTE : This position requires bilingualism in English and French and is located at Glendon College : 2275 Bayview Avenue, Toronto.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Campus Services & Business Operations, the Director Satellite Campuses leads and develops an internal team responsible for the delivery of responsive, effective and efficient facilities and maintenance services at York University’s Glendon campus, as well as the future Markham Centre and future campuses if assigned.

The Director ensures the effective maintenance and renewal of all infrastructure and facilities including student residences, grounds, parking lots, retail spaces, and buildings (academic & non-

academic) so that students, staff, faculty and visitors have a safe and supportive learning and work environment, and that the academic mission of the campus is supported.

The Director responds to campus emergencies, directs resources as appropriate, and invokes the support of the AVP CSBO and CSBO resources as required by the event.

The Director may have daily oversight of local ancillary services teams who provide support to the satellite campuses in the areas of bookstore, student housing & conference services, parking, and food services, specifically to ensure that local priorities are recognized and supported.

The Director works closely and collaboratively with the corresponding functional unit Directors at the Keele campus to ensure consistent and effective use of technology, systems, policies and procedures across all campuses.

The Director is the primary contact for the leadership at the satellite campuses to ensure that the requirements and priorities of each unique campus location are acknowledged, understood and appropriately addressed.

As such, the Director is required to work proactively and collaboratively with the satellite campus senior academic leadership teams.

The Director informs the AVP CSBO of emergency and operational issues that may affect the execution of the academic mission, or otherwise may have significant policy, property, public relations, safety or financial implications.

The Director’s resources are assigned by the AVP CSBO either directly or via the CSBO functional directors. In the absence of the AVP CSBO, represents the AVP with respect to satellite campuses as assigned.

The Director is supported by the CSBO Financial Services and the CSBO Human Resources functional units.

Education :

Demonstrated competencies attained through a university degree in engineering, science or business or combined equivalent education and experience.

A Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) is preferred.Bilingual in English and French languages required.

Experience :

This position requires a minimum of 10 years recent, relevant experience working and managing in a unionized environment overseeing the operation and maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds with both internal staff and contractors.

Experience in ancillary service operations (e.g. student residences, parking, bookstores, mailing, food) is preferred. Experience in an educational setting is preferred.

Experience with district heating and cooling will be an asset.

  • Excellent leadership & communication skills : demonstrated ability to provide effective leadership to teams; must be able to effectively navigate competing priorities to find acceptable solutions;
  • must have the ability to work independently and to perform effectively as a member of a team; excellent client relationship management skills are required to gather feedback, develop programs to meet client needs and provide exceptional customer / client service.

    Ability to evaluate, modify and implement solutions to complex problems and situations. Requires management skills in dealing with a significantly unionized workforce.

  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and deal with people in a calm and effective manner in sometimes sensitive situations;
  • ability to mediate and diffuse sensitive situations regarding client / customer complaints while working effectively within the guidelines of a collective agreement.

  • Excellent writing skills : strategic recommendations, reports and proposals for higher level business decisions based on quantifying and qualifying facts;
  • assist with writing RFP specifications; writing standard operating procedures for internal staff and external departments;
  • ability to produce clear, concise procedural documentation and plans.

    Excellent verbal skills : elicit accurate information, respond to inquiries and complaints.

  • Ability to meet short / long term deadlines; using analytical skills, set priorities and work effectively under pressure of high volume work;
  • keep up to date with administration developments (human resources, finance, operations); excellent organizational skills.
