Job Description

The Controls Centre of Expertise ( CoE ) is a customer-focused team that provides professional, expert advice to senior management in their execution of an effective internal controls strategy.

The Controls CoE plays a key role in divisional financial control oversight, and supports various projects and initiatives to develop, enhance and monitor internal control programs within the Group Insurance, Annuities and Individual Insurance businesses, as well as the financial, actuarial and operational functions supporting these businesses.

Reporting to the Manager Control Programs, the Senior Control Analyst will plan and execute control consulting projects, support external audits and regulatory examinations of the business, and review the implementation of management action plans to address internal control gaps.

The incumbent will have an opportunity to work with business leaders to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls and related processes.

This role is best suited to an internal control professional with strong relationship management, customer service, communication and influencing skills.

The incumbent will also serve as a role model and mentor for peers and junior team members by sharing knowledge and providing honest and timely feedback while inspiring others to be engaged in the tasks and projects.

We currently have team members based in our Waterloo, Montreal and Halifax offices, so candidates from these (and other) locations will be given equal consideration.

Key Accountabilities :

  • Demonstrate commitment towards continuously updating knowledge and skills while incorporating feedback.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Controls Program CoE processes
  • Play an active role as part of Controls CoE in achieving the goals of process improvement and internal controls best practices, while ensuring timely and effective implementation of change initiatives
  • Participate in discussions, ask questions, and ensure understanding of issues before proceeding.
  • Identify and recommend best practices, process, and controls.
  • Customer Service

  • Build relationships and establish a high level of credibility with Canadian Division contacts and External auditors
  • Identify and recommend opportunities to refine ControlsCoE service offerings
  • Identify and escalate customer service issues where appropriate
  • Control Consulting Projects

  • Identify and evaluate project scoping options using the COSO framework and make recommendations to Manager
  • Prepare project plans and monitor progress against key milestones
  • Identify and escalate issues to Manager related to : scope, schedule, cost or quality
  • Schedule and lead process walkthrough meetings with business leaders
  • Obtain or prepare relevant process and control documentation (risk matrices, flow charts and / or narratives)
  • Identify and assess inherent risks and related key controls, and document and evaluate internal control gaps
  • Draft reports that accurately and concisely present findings, including practical and well-supported recommendations to improve internal controls and present to business leaders
  • Lead meetings to discuss findings with business leaders
  • Support Audits and Regulatory Examinations

  • Work with auditors and regulatory examiners to understand the scope of testing required and its impact on the business;
  • identify opportunities to streamline the testing approach and reduce business effort

  • Coordinate meetings / contacts involving auditors, regulatory examiners and the business (i.e. information gathering, walkthrough validation, and test sample collection for complex processes)
  • Coordinate the delivery of relevant information and audit evidence to auditors and regulatory examiners
  • Provide business leaders with insightful analysis of options available to address audit issues and recommendations
  • Advise business areas of audit scoping options, available evidence sources, draft findings and management action plans
  • Control Dashboards and Issue Status Reporting

  • Follow-up with business leaders and provide status updates of management action plans to address identified audit issues and SOX deficiencies
  • Prepare control dashboards designed to provide senior leaders with a holistic view of risk and control related projects, issues and action plan status.
  • Qualifications : Essential :

    Essential :

  • CPA designation with 3-5 years of relevant experience in progressive accounting roles
  • Post-secondary education in accounting or related field is required
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, particularly in the area of using sound, independent judgment, problem-
  • solving, analytical skills, managing conflicting priorities and delivering results within tight deadlines

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with influencing and negotiation abilities
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Process analysis and documentation skills, including flow charting
  • Strong business acumen with ability to communicate complex concepts and the results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner (written and verbal).
  • Additional Assets :

  • Experience applying the COSO framework to internal control assessments
  • Knowledge and experience from an internal / external audit role
  • CIA designation or working towards
  • Knowledge of life and health insurance industry, including actuarial processes
  • Public accounting experience
