A Principal System Design Engineer at Doble Engineering is responsible for participating in the research, design and development of diagnostic products for the electric power generation, transmission and distribution industry.
The products being developed will require the Engineer to employ a broad array of skills covering many areas of hardware and embedded software design.
As such, the Engineer should have some familiarity in the following areas : Power system design - including design of high-
voltage and high-current AC and DC sources, microprocessor design, FPGA development, analog measurement, A / D implementations, design simulation, and design of control and power amplifier circuits.
The Engineer we are looking for should have significant design strengths in small signal measurement, signal filtering topologies, and instrumentation.
The Engineer is responsible for part selections, schematic capture, and supervising circuit board layout. Responsibilities will include participating in the overall product design, developing system architectures, experimentation, and prototyping of concepts for evaluation.
The Engineer must have solid communication skills to be able to participate in a distributed small team environment, while managing their own assigned responsibilities.

Essential Job Functions
Provide architectural oversight of product development for the Vanguard product family
Design digital circuits, including the use of A / D and D / A converters, MPUs, FPGAs, CPLDs, SRAM, and Serial Flash
Design high-voltage and high-current power circuits, including the use of transformers, amplifiers, and power supplies
Design precision measurement circuits
Design and develop both integral user interfaces and APIs to external Windows PC-based applications
Develop specifications for design of new systems and enhancement of existing systems
Develop block diagrams and schematics
Run simulations, where appropriate, to evaluate designs
Quickly prototype new concepts and ideas
Select and qualify components for new designs and for life extension of existing designs
Supervise printed circuit board layouts
Debug and bring-up new boards, modules, and systems
Specify and develop board, module, and system-level test fixtures and software.
Develop timelines for assigned work
Work with software engineers to refine interfaces between different assemblies.
Participate in development programs that may include use of contracting houses
Supervise and help in the development of more junior engineers
Participate in project team meetings.
Conduct detailed and thorough integration testing of hardware and embedded software and prepare reports.
Participate in peer review of hardware and software designs
Interface with mechanical, electrical, test, production, and support engineers and technicians
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering,

10+ years of applicable work experience
System development and integration in a team environment
Experience with designing for CPLDs using Verilog hardware design language
Experience with design tools such as schematic capture and PC board layout tools
Experience using lab equipment (like oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, power supplies, and calibrated references) to test and verify the performance of circuits, modules, and systems
Experience with control of high voltage and high current systems
Experience with embedded and host applications developed in C, C++, Visual Basic and .NET
Experience in new product development
OTHER HELPFUL EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
Solid understanding of real-time embedded system design
Experience with Microchip Development Environment (MPLAB-X IDE) and Harmony Configurator tools
Experience with Cadence OrCAD schematic capture tool
Experience with Intel / Altera programmable logic product family and Quartus software design environment
Ability to understand code written in Assembly and translate to C as part of product upgrade
Experience designing systems to meet international conformity requirements (e.g. EU Directives, aka CE Mark )
Familiarity with RS232, SPI, USB and Bluetooth communication protocols
Knowledge of utility and industrial power systems and related apparatus such as transformers, circuit breakers, and protection relays
Basic experience with development of PC software
Basic knowledge of Linux for firmware development
