Job Summary

AECOM's Impact Assessment and Permitting team in Alberta is looking for a Terrestrial Ecologist to support our existing projects activities and to grow our capacity to serve clients on challenging and exciting projects across Western Canada.

This role will be based out of our Calgary office.

The appropriately qualified candidate will have 4+ years of experience conducting and leading terrestrial ecology field work as well as knowledge and experience in the taxonomic identification of plants / animals and implementation of field protocols, be highly motivated and accountable, enjoy working outdoors, work well collaboratively with other team members, and be an effective communicator.

Individuals should have a background conducting biological inventories, including Ecological Land Classification (ELC), terrestrial wildlife habitat assessments and species inventories, and associated data analysis and reporting.

Strong organizational skills, leadership skills, and an ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced environment are essential qualities.

The position will involve leading or supporting terrestrial ecology investigations including field work in support of baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, Species at Risk permitting and mitigation plans, and related scopes of work.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to :

Lead or support a field crew to undertake data collection and field investigations to document baseline terrestrial ecology conditions according to study requirements in urban and remote sites in Western Canada, although mainly in Alberta

Provide technical support to less experienced field staff (e.g. in verifying plant taxonomic identification)

Data entry and report writing

Adhere to and enforce AECOM’s Health and Safety Protocols

This position will require individuals to work remotely for periods of time as part of field crews based on project locations

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree or diploma in environmental science or biology, from a recognized University or College

4+ years of related experience

Strong technical capability in identifying flora of Alberta and the Canadian prairies

Demonstrated experience identifying fauna of Alberta and the rest of the Prairies (e.g. birds, amphibians, snakes, turtles, mammals including bats, insects, etc.)

Demonstrated experience conducting and leading teams for biological field work

Experience with air photo interpretation (hard / soft copy), Global Positioning Systems, and map and compass orientation

Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently

Ability to work in both field and office environments

Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

Report writing & field protocols

Alberta Wetland Classification System training

Experience writing and preparing technical reports

Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel

Wilderness First Aid and / or wilderness experience

Has access to a vehicle for conducting field work
