Position Purpose : Responsible for the development, internal presentation, and submission of complete cost estimates for designated construction projects as assigned.
Adhering to sound engineering practices, and ensuring accuracy and timeliness of submissions.
Job Duties include, but not limited to :
Actively search out prospective bidding opportunities through various sources including internets, printed media, and through industry networking and discussions with clients and engineering consultants.
Review and have a thorough understanding of all project specifications and drawings, ensuring all tendering notices are received during the bidding process as assigned.
Using first principles, as a rule, develop multiple estimates accurately and at the same time, adhering to the timeframe allotted by the client for a timely tender submission.
Contact several subcontractors and suppliers with RFQs and follow-up to ensure a timely response, as well as ensuring they understand the scope they are quoting on.
During the estimating process, clarify any identifiable points of contention or vague specifications in the contract documents with the owner or his representative, to avoid problems during the construction of the project.
Before the tender closing date, perform presentation of completed estimate with Estimating Manager, superintendents, project managers, and the construction manager to ensure that the estimate is consistent with the company strategies.
Indicate concisely where the risk lies within the specific project.
Upon award of a contract, schedule a meeting with the appropriate operations personnel and present the essential project information, ensuring the operations team has a complete understanding of the project, and where the risk lies.
Attend job progress meetings when possible, and especially if requested by the department manager, to be abreast of site status in case estimator input is required.
Assist project managers with any technical and pricing matters that may arise after the tender has closed.
Maintain personal contacts with the customer and owner project managers, contract administrator, other project representatives, subcontractors, and suppliers.
Participate in job completion reviews to assess and fully understand how the construction project unfolded.
Conduct yourself in a professional and mature manner at all times.
Develop additional skills by asking questions and seeking out learning opportunities from Sr. Estimating staff.
Assist other estimators within the department as may be required. All other duties requested by management.
Extensive experience with MTO projects.
Civil Engineering Technologist or Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Civil preferable) from an accredited university or college.
Excellent engineering and practical construction understanding.
Computer literate (Word, Excel, Project, Project, etc ).
Strong organizational / analytical skills.
Clear oral and written communication abilities.
Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques.
Strong work ethic and the ability to work cooperatively with other staff.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Must be able to work with little supervision; must be self-directed.
Maintain a valid driver’s licence.
High level of personal integrity and bondable.
Travel to various sites may be required.
Indoor and outdoor environments; various weather conditions.
Weekend and evening work may be required to meet the demands of the position.
