Summary :

Provide EH&S support to the team, Operations and Pharmaceutical Development Services (PDS).

Essential Functions :

Provides EH&S support to the department as well as Processing, Pharmaceutics Process Technology (PPT), Project Management and Pharmaceutical Development Services (PDS) Laboratory

  • Incident investigations
  • JHSC audit finding closures
  • Risk assessments
  • Department specific training
  • Client & auditor support
  • Provides Environmental Support

  • Completes the national pollutant release inventory (NPRI) report
  • Ships dangerous goods following the regulations and provide guidance to employees
  • Manages hazardous waste management program
  • Manages waste water discharge program ensuring compliance with Sewer Use By-Law
  • Manages New Substance Notification Regulations (NSNR) program
  • Completes Toxic Reduction submissions as needed
  • Provides Safety Support

  • Conducts equipment reviews
  • Coordinates pre-start health and safety review completion
  • Development of safety programs such as lock out and machine guarding
  • Provides IH Support

  • Conducts Industrial Hygiene (IH) assessments on existing products and evaluate technologies to improve containment.
  • Development of Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) and IH analytical methods
  • Development of IH sampling plans and sampling strategies
  • Written industrial hygiene reports and presentations
  • Making recommendations for improving containment, engineering controls etc., where necessary
  • Participating in work-teams to evaluate containment of existing processes and implement containment plans.
  • Completion of health effects table information and communication to all Patheon sites
  • Updating the health effects table and toxicity categorization databases
  • Develops and Implements EH&S Programs

  • Safety examples : Equipment and process safety reviews
  • Industrial hygiene examples : respiratory protection, noise and air sampling
  • Environment examples : Certificate of Approval for Air, NPRI, NSNR
  • Develops audit protocols, audit programs, procedures and practices for the EH&S Programs
  • Develops and conducts EH&S training

  • Orientation training
  • Monthly safety talks
  • Department specific training
  • New Project Risk Assessments

  • Attends Kick-Off Meetings and ongoing Project Meetings
  • Evaluates containment / industrial hygiene for new projects
  • Potent Compound active-specific procedures and training
  • Liaises with Project Managers, Process Engineers and Clients
  • Complete and / or assist special EH&S Projects

  • Provides guidance, back-up and support to other EH&S team members and Health Centre (10%)
  • Respiratory Protection Program and Fit Testing

  • Reviews and updates the respiratory protection program, as necessary.
  • Implements Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) maintenance and testing programs, as necessary.
  • Conducts respirator fit testing for employees and clients
  • Assists in selection and use of respiratory protection, protective clothing, hearing protection and safety glasses - plano and prescription)
  • May be essential to perform alternating or rotating shift work (as required) Other duties as assigned

    Education :

    B.Sc. or B.A. with relevant experience / completion of EHS certificate programs

    Experience :

    1 to 3 years of previous EHS experience

    1 to 3 years of Industrial Hygiene training / experience

    1 to 3 years of Chemical, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical work experience

    Equivalency :

    Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered.

    Competencies :

    Able to work in a fast-pace environment. Previous experience conducting presentations / training. High integrity for dealing with confidential information.

    Demonstrated professionalism. Excellent interpersonal skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

    Physical Requirements :

    Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment.

    Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. Regular need to attend to and decipher sensory input that requires diligence and attention to interpret effectively.
