Please Note : The temporary position is irregular, on-call and the hours of work vary from 0-40 hours per week, and are not guaranteed.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In a large-volume facility kitchen, you will :

  • Participate in all areas of meal preparation, safety, security and food inventory / rotation
  • Maintain housekeeping and sanitary work conditions
  • Inspect eating facilities and equipment to ensure standards are maintained
  • Follow prescribed menus, work schedules and dietary charts, and substituting menu changes
  • Serve and portion meals
  • Train and supervise youth helpers
  • How do I qualify?

    Technical Knowledge and Skills :

  • You have knowledge of general volume cooking methods and procedures
  • You are experienced in food preparation and storage procedures / methods
  • You have knowledge of portion control standards to prepare a variety of foods, volume meals and restricted diets
  • You have knowledge of the proper use of kitchen equipment
  • Other Essential Skills :

    Your skills and abilities will include :

  • Team leadership skills to provide instruction to subordinate youth helpers
  • Oral communication skills and tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff, youth helpers and service providers to address quantity / quality issues
  • Written communication skills to prepare various reports
  • Analytical and problem solving skills to identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food service issues
  • Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Public Health Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
  • Basic computer skills to input, track and record data

    Note :

  • The successful candidate will be required to undergo a satisfactory criminal reference check prior to the commencement of employment.
  • In accordance with the Ontario Public Service (OPS), Employment Screening Checks Policy (ESCP), the top candidate(s) may be required to undergo a security screening check.
  • Refer to the above to determine the screening checks that are required for this position.

    You will be responsible for obtaining the criminal record check at your own expense and provide it, along with your written consent, to the Transition and Security Office (TSO), Talent Acquisition Branch (TAB), HR Service Delivery Division (HRSDD) to evaluate the results.

    If applicable, the TSO, with your written consent, will request and obtain any additional employment screening checks that were not obtained directly by you.

    Note : If a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service).

    A record under the Criminal Code and / or other federal offence record(s) does not automatically mean you will be ineligible for the position.

    The employment screening check(s) will only be reviewed and evaluated by the TSO for the purpose of making a security clearance decision.

    The details of an individual's employment screening check(s) will be considered in specific relation to the duties and responsibilities of the position being filled.

    Employment screening check records will be maintained by the TSO and kept strictly confidential.
