JOB SUMMARY

Niagara Region is looking to hire an Employment Inventory Data Intern to assist in the project management and administration of an annual Employment Inventory project from November 2021 -December 2022.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate of a related program, who can commit to the entire 14-month work term.

Employment data collected through this project will help to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current employment landscape within Niagara and play a significant role in supporting decisions related to population and employment growth, infrastructure investment and the monitoring of economic conditions and trends.

  • The intern will be responsible for assisting with the coordination of the survey team while in the field; collecting survey responses from business owners, ensuring appropriate follow-up with survey respondents;
  • performing data quality assurance / quality checks; and, analyzing and reporting data results / trends.

    This position is for an 14-month duration (November through December). The first six (6) months will primarily consist of assisting in deployment planning, technical implementation and staff recruiting.

    The second four (4) month period will consist of assisting in the training of the survey team; conducting face-to-face surveys with business owners and coordinating the survey team deployment strategy.

    The final four (4) months will primarily consist of performing data quality assurance checks and performing data analysis to inform a report back to Regional Council.

    This is an excellent opportunity to experience the full project cycle of this important primary data gathering initiative.

    This project involves visiting businesses throughout Niagara between May - September and conducting in-person interviews with business owners.

    The team will primarily compile the inventory results on a handheld mobile device using mobile GIS technology, but will also be required to perform other office duties to support the project.

    Location : Students will report to Niagara Regional Headquarters (1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way) throughout the work week, however, daily travel will be required within the Niagara region.

    Incumbent must supply their own safe and reliable vehicle as method of work related transportation, and be able to work both outdoors and in an office setting.

    Hours & Duration of Work : Monday to Friday (days), November 2021 to December, 2022.

    JOB ENVIRONMENT

  • Work involves frequent, direct interaction with the public, representing Niagara Region
  • Work involves walking, travelling and entering data the majority of the time
  • Work involves exposure to inclement weather (ex. heat, rain, etc.)
  • EDUCATION

  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalency (ex. GED), plus
  • Must meet ONE of the following 2 criteria related to a post-secondary field of study in Business and Administration; Geography and Environment;
  • Computer Science; Communications; Labour Studies; Political Science; Social Science; or, Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • 1-Must have successfully completed a post-secondary program within the last 12 months (or will complete prior to starting)
  • KNOWLEDGE

  • Project management experience
  • High degree of computer proficiency in Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs
  • Knowledge of the ESRI Suite of GIS applications and GIS principles
  • Experience working with databases
  • Experience analyzing and reporting on data finding using business intelligence software
  • Experience with use of mobile hardware and touch screen apps
  • Experience using web-based and hard copy maps for operational and navigational purposes
  • SKILLS

  • Ability to collect and manage information efficiently and accurately.
  • Ability to work alone, as well as in a team
  • Self-motivated, confident and responsible
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Comfortable interacting with members of the public frequently on a daily basis.
  • Comfortable performing routine and repetitive tasks (ex. data entry)
  • Comfortable working in inclement weather
  • Comfortable working in pairs / teams with other students and staff
  • Comfortable working in the field, which requires extended time on your feet and walking
  • Previous related work, co-op or volunteer experience is an asset
  • Ability to adapt to changes in assignment priority
  • Attentive to detail and resourceful.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must provide proof of successful completion of high school
  • Must provide proof of completion of a related post-secondary program within 12 months of the position
  • Must provide proof of valid driver’s license & adequate automobile insurance (G class license is preferred)
  • Must have access to a safe and reliable vehicle for daily business travel
  • Must be able to start full-time work for a period of 14 months, as early as November 1, 2021.
