The VAW Counsellor will provide counselling to Anishnaabekwewag and their families who have been, are being, or at risk of being abused.

The VAW Counsellor will meet the service targets as set out in the service description schedule per the contractual agreement between the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS) and Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle (NASC).

The Service Description Schedule outlines the objectives, descriptions and features that outline the ideal delivery of service between the MCSS and Niijkiwendidaa Anishnaabekwewag Services Circle.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Post-Secondary program in social work, counselling or other social science or health-related discipline is required or equivalent employment experience.
  • The nature of the position requires that the employee have a valid driver’s license and unlimited access to a vehicle
  • Must provide C.P.I.C. records check.
  • Proven Knowledge of Indigenous Community, Colonial History (effects of) & Appropriate Holistic Counselling Practice.
  • Provide professional casework, client-based counselling, advocacy and referral services to
  • Anishnaabekwewag and their families in a confidential manner o Provide risk assessment and safety planning for clients o Facilitate client accompaniment to court, police, hospitals, etc, when possible o Provide one-to-one holistic counselling for clients on a regular basis;
  • assess client progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems

  • oDevelop and implement holistic counselling and intervention plans while providing necessary support to assist clients in determining goals and means of attaining them
  • oEvaluate the effectiveness of counselling programs and clients’ progress in resolving identified problems and movement toward defined objectives
  • oFacilitate groups sessions including talking / sharing circles o Prepare assessment, progress, follow-up and court reports (as needed)
  • oMaintain appropriate contact with other social service agencies involved with clients to provide information and obtain feedback on clients’ overall progress
  • oThe VAW Counsellor will be expected to incorporate culturally appropriate Counselling methods.
