  • Flexibility in hours is expected, work may include evenings and weekends
  • Based on 30-40 hours per week for a total of 280 hours over 8 weeks starting July 6, 2020
  • Responsibilities

    Position Purpose summary :

    Oversee and coordinate Shelter Lounge activities and support Shelter Workers & Shelter Manager.

    Key Responsibilities :

  • Willingness & ability to work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
  • Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy
  • Support, where and when possible, the efforts of all residents and co-workers
  • Plan and organize social and connection activities for shelter clients
  • Maintain consistent structure in Shelter Lounge
  • Update client files and case notes in data entry system
  • Assist Shelter Workers and Case Workers as required
  • Attend Public Relations events as requested
  • Give guidance, support and encouragement to volunteers
  • Organize and restock supplies
  • Keep accurate records (ie number of clients, number of meals, etc)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Qualifications

    Education / Certifications

  • Between 18-30 years of age at start of employment as per Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility requirements
  • Preference to those who have completed High School
  • Current valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record an asset
  • CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, and Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset
  • Experience :

  • Preference given to those who have prior related experience in social services field
  • Strong service ethic and a friendly disposition with the public
  • Team oriented and able to take initiative
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • High standards of integrity and confidentiality
  • Required Skills / Knowledge :

  • Effective communication skills
  • Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Computer and word processing ability
  • Ability to lift more than 15 kgs (30 pounds)
  • Agreeable to a flexible, non-routine schedule
  • Food Safe, CPR, First Aid, Naloxone, and Non-Violent Crisis Training an asset
  • Successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Records Review Program
