About the Opportunity

We have a great opportunity for a Director, Yuustway Health, Wellness and Recreation Services to join our dynamic and progressive First Nations government in North Vancouver.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Community Development this Director position is responsible for a 25+ person department with 4+ divisions and approximately 3 million budget in addition to the following departmental goals :

  • Alignment of departmental programs, policies and processes to support the Squamish Nation’s vision and mission;
  • Advocacy to external agencies on behalf of the SN and individual community members to ensure access to preventative, medical, dental and supported health services;
  • Complies with regulatory requirements regarding the delegation and delivery of health services;
  • The development, implementation and evaluation of high quality and timely health and community support services for the Squamish Nation community;
  • The development and implementation of recreational programming that promotes active healthy living and community connection.
  • The incorporation of Squamish cultural and traditional practices into program delivery.
  • The position involves the development of annual strategic plans, relationship building, fiscal management of department budgets, health and recreation program delivery, staff management, events planning, communications and facilities management.

    Oversees the activities of five divisions with operations in North Vancouver and the Squamish Valley. This position requires the incumbent to operate at a high level of analytical, information processing and human interaction.

    Primary duties and responsibilities include :

  • Plans, communicates and oversees the activities of the Squamish Nation Health and Recreation Department.
  • Conducts research and establishes community-based goals and strategies.
  • Coordinates annual health and recreation programs, reports and budgets.
  • Creates effective reporting protocols and communications plan for Health and Recreation Services Department.
  • Develops and implements annual work plans of health and recreational program delivery.
  • Coordinates annual calendar of events and public speaking engagements.
  • Maintains good working relationships and provides personal service to members.
  • Manages and directs work activities of staff and buildings.
  • Supervises the Health and Safety of Employees and adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as a member of Squamish Nation Leadership Team.
  • The Ideal Candidate

    For this role, we are seeking a seasoned professional who has exceptional knowledge of health, wellness and recreations services, as well as health administration, people / staff and financial management.

    The successful candidate will have :

  • Masters or Bachelor’s degree from a recognized post-secondary specializing in Public Health Administration, Public Health, Primary Care, Nursing, Mental Health, Health Social Worker or relevant / related field.
  • Plus Seven years (with Masters) or ten years directly-related experience in the majority of specialties listed in the job description including department management, senior health program administration, 20+ staff management / supervision, proven experience developing productive relationships with high ranking stakeholders such as Provincial Ministers, senior program directors, leaders and First Nations leadership and large budgetary responsibilities, etc.
  • Experience as an intermediate or advanced level user of email, MS Office Suite.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is asset.
  • Minimum of 7 years previous work experience building and maintaining an effective management team in a department of 10+.
  • Previous management experience in a private / public sector organization that oversees the delivery of community services is desirable.
  • Previous work experience must include financial management, working with Governance Boards / Councils or Sr. Executives, directing and leading teams, developing and maintain stakeholder relationships, staff evaluations and other HR matters.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must be able to travel as required.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5. Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must pass a Criminal Records Check with a vulnerable sector search as per Squamish Nation policy.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to program design and coordination, outreach initiatives health care, policy writing, mediation, employment law, investigation, conflict resolution, case management and staff supervision and first nations healthcare systems, etc.
