The Role

The International Student Assistant is responsible for organizing activities that help to engage international students in the college and local community.

This position also brings the international student perspective into the planning of events, promotional materials and processes to foster student retention.


In conjunction with the International Education Advisor :

  • Assists in the planning and organizing social and cultural activities for the Cultural Connections program.
  • Organizes and maintains the International Student Club.
  • Organizes student activities for International Day.
  • Assists in organizing activities for student orientation including recruiting and coordinating student volunteers, leading sessions on student life, and planning and implementing social events.
  • Attends campus activities and works on projects to engage and connect international students with campus services and resources.
  • Organizes initiatives that provide international students with opportunities to volunteer and / or become involved in the community.
  • Provides peer counseling and refers students to appropriate campus services and International Education Advisors for assistance and support.
  • Creates and maintains an online calendar and web site of international student academic and social activities. Promotes these activities to international students.
  • Organizes student groups to provide input into promotional materials, website design, and events to ensure consistency with student expectations and needs.
  • Advises Douglas College International of student engagement issues and recommends mitigation strategies.
  • Performs other student assistant duties as assigned by Douglas International.
  • To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Maintains a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Language requirement : proficiency in English (at the academic level). - Demonstrated experience or interest related to international education services.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, teamwork and leadership skills. - Demonstrated ability to complete tasks independently and on time.

    Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant : 1.

    The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR

    2.The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR

    3.The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-

    secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term

    International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant : 1.

    The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR

    2.The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-

    secondary institution in B.C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W).

    Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria. Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

    An original copy of a Social Insurance Number (SIN) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

    Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
