Purpose :

This position is primarily responsible for assisting library users with a broad range of directional and general reference enquiries, particularly in the social science and humanities.

This person will provide information and reference services by telephone, in person, and online and provides circulation services both in person and through the book lockers and the AFN network.

This position assists with the processing and maintenance of library collections. This position is also responsible for providing ongoing support to library users for resolving basic computing issues at public workstations.

Education :

University degree in either the social sciences or humanities required, or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks.

This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

Experience :

Two (2) years' experience in providing related front-line public service in a high-volume area. Some library public service and / or academic research experience preferred.

Experience in operation of computer terminal including the use of an on-line records system required.

Skills :

Typing 40-45 w.p.m., accuracy essential. attending accurately to detail under pressure of high volume. knowledge of general library catalogues and social science or humanities-related bibliographic searching tools.

knowledge of an on-line records system required. demonstrated skill / ability in the following areas : speaking, reading and writing knowledge of French, bilingual modules I (intermediate).

III (intermediate). intermediate word processing, spread-sheet and database skills, preferably in MS Office (Word, Excel, MS Access).

working with data to compile reports. working accurately with figures. working independently, dealing calmly, courteously and effectively with people.

excellent oral and written communication skills. ability to answer general and social science and humanities-related enquiries clearly and concisely, specifically in a reference oriented environment.

excellent organizational abilities including setting priorities, multi-tasking and working under pressure of high volume.

problem solving skills and good judgement. accuracy in handling of cash transactions.
