The Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences .
Job Description :
There is currently no treatment for Alzheimer disease (AD), the most common form of senile dementia affecting 47 million people worldwide.
In 2016, the AD-related Dementias Summit identified vascular biology as one of keys national research priorities for the diagnosis and treatment of dementia.
Cerebrovascular dysfunction that includes degeneration of brain capillary endothelial cells forming the microvessels of blood brain barrier and altered regulation of cerebral blood flow, is frequent in AD.
Importantly, the Apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 (APOE4) allele, the strongest genetic factor for AD, is associated with cerebrovascular defects.
Furthermore, CD2AP, a Top 10 AD gene, encodes for a protein that is highly enriched in brain capillary endothelial cells.
Using a multidisciplinary approach (microscopy, molecular / cellular biology, primary cell cultures, animal models and MRI), the candidate will investigate the functions of ApoE4 and CD2AP in the brain endothelium, and determine how these two AD genetic predisposition factors synergize to contribute to cerebrovascular dysfunction in AD.
The candidate is expected to lead the project, secure internal or external funding, and be a team player.
