Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is looking for a Lead Hatchery Management Biologist (BI-03) to manage all unit staff and operations at Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility.

Principally, Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility operates a captive breeding program designed to maintain the genetic diversity of Atlantic salmon populations of conservation concern and facilitate the re-

establishment of self-sustaining populations in the Maritimes Region. The successful candidate for this position will :

  • manage all operations and maintenance at the Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility
  • manage a staff complement ranging from 10-20 full-time, seasonal, and part-time employees
  • work closely with DFO Science staff colleagues, academia, indigenous organisations, non-governmental organisations, industry and other stakeholders on collaborative initiatives associated with Atlantic salmon conservation
  • provide information and advice to DFO Science staff colleagues on operational and scientific matters related to activities associated with Mactaquac Biodiversity Facility.

    We are seeking a qualified person to fill one (1) Lead Hatchery Management Biologist position.

    A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions of various language requirements, tenures and security requirements within Science Branch, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region.

    In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

    A bachelors degree in a biological sciences discipline from a recognized educational institution

  • Experience managing financial, human resources, and operations of greater than 5 persons
  • Significant* experience in land-based fish husbandry (e.g. supplementation, commercial aquaculture or conservation-focused fish hatchery setting)
  • Experience establishing or maintaining effective internal or external partnerships or collaborations
  • Experience in developing written project proposals or funding agreements with internal or external partners or collaborators
  • As defined by a minimum of 2 years of practical experience working in a fish husbandry environment.
  • If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

    A masters degree in a biological sciences discipline from a recognized educational institution or a technical diploma in fish hatchery management obtained from a recognized educational institution.

  • Experience managing financial, human resources, and operations of a fish hatchery.
  • Significant* experience in land-based salmonid fish husbandry (e.g. supplementation, commercial aquaculture or conservation-
  • focused fish hatchery setting).

  • Experience designing scientific experiments.
  • Experience preparing scientific manuscripts.
  • Experience conducting field work in freshwater environments to monitor fish populations with equipment such as electrofishers, operating rotary screw traps, counting fences, fishways and / or seine nets.
  • Experience working with aboriginal organizations.
  • As defined by a minimum of 2 years of practical experience working in a fish husbandry environment
