Reporting to the Manager, Emergency Department, the Registered Nurse works in a collaborative practice model and functions in an expanded nursing role to provide Mental Health patient care within the Emergency Room Department.
The RN demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge base in mental health exhibiting a high degree of clinical competence in caring for patients and families with mental illness.
The RN will work collaboratively with the inpatient mental health team, psychiatrists, Crisis team and the Emergency Department.
This position will ensure that a Recovery focused model of care will be used with mental health patients and will assist in achieving positive outcomes in a safe and therapeutic environment.
The position’s primary responsibility is to work with mental health patients in the Emergency Department. When there are no patients this position will float to Unit 4-5.
Qualifications / Skills / Abilities :
RN Certificate of competence with Ontario College of Nurses
Recent mental health nursing experience within the past three years
Working knowledge of Mental Health Act, HCCA, SDMA and the DSM-V
Demonstrated ability to conduct psychosocial and psychiatric assessment including a risk assessment
Knowledge of community resources and navigation of broader mental health system
Demonstrates an ability to think critically and respond effectively to emergent situations
Familiarity with the Recovery Model, CBT, Motivational Interviewing as well as support, advocacy and education services to patients and as needed to their support person(s)
Valid CPI course
Excellent leadership, problem solving, decision making, organizational and patient assessment skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills demonstrated
Ability to work cooperatively within a multi-disciplinary team setting
Commitment to continuing education
Ability and willingness to ensure patient safety e.g. following routine practices and practicing diligent hand washing, completing patient risk assessments, reporting adverse events
Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records
Knowledge of and adherence to GBHS CARE’ Behaviours (Collaboration, Accountability, Respect, Excellence)
Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at GBHS through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes
