Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Engineering the Chief Engineer is responsible for directing the technical activities for the requirements, design, test, manufacture, and logistics support of Avionics programs and opportunities.
Meeting the corresponding contract technical performance requirements and be able to execute an interdisciplinary systems engineering process to ensure that the customer and stakeholders’ needs are satisfied in a high quality, trustworthy, cost efficient, and schedule compliant manner throughout a system’s entire life cycle.
Reporting in an Integrated Project Team role to both engineering and program management functions, this individual will be responsible to the Project Manager for the technical execution of the program to ensure technical compliance within cost and budget constraints.
Major Roles and Responsibilities :
Becoming knowledgeable of and fully understanding the requirements, specifications, and customer’s expectations of avionics programs;
Directing the technical activities of Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Software and Test Engineers to develop and deliver avionics systems that fully meets the system requirements and customer’s expectations;
Lead major problem resolution efforts and support regaining or attaining customer confidence;
Provide technical knowledge and assistance to other engineers and support personnel;
Responsible for architectural design, requirements engineering, systems engineering documentation, risk management, verification and validation, and completion of activities on time and budget;
Lead the development of prototype activities within engineering and manufacturing;
Promote use of simulations to predict system performance along with alternate solutions as a means to keeping programs on track;
Ensure systems engineering process and quality assurance are integrated into program plans;
Lead engineers on technical activity and completion of activity on time and budget;
Provide budget, cost and schedule input for design assignments;
Conducts system level trade studies, including Make / Buy analyses to develop an optimal solution;
Justify and support acquisition of subcontractor services and test equipment as needed;
Drive program design to cost, schedule and manufacturing requirements;
Participate heavily in the preparation of complex proposals;
Provide guidance and coaching to other Engineers, in multi-disciplined teams;
Support, communicate, reinforce and defend the mission, values and culture of the organization; and
Requirement for periodic travel to customer sites.
Core Competencies :
Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related technical field or equivalent work experience;
A minimum of ten (10) years equivalent engineering experience;
Experience within a multi-disciplinary engineering environment, including systems, software, hardware, mechanical and test Engineering;
Experienced with the development of commercial Avionics systems using design process RTCA / DO 254 up to Level B for hardware and RTCA / DO-178B / C Level D for software;
Experience with qualification of systems using DO160 test procedures. Familiarity with ED 112A and / or ED62X is considered an asset;
Familiarity with systems tools and COTS applications for system requirements management;
Understanding of tools and materials used in an airborne environment;
Experience with life cycle models including Agile, waterfall; Change Management techniques;
Experience with communication protocols and real time system design methods;
Experience with prototype development using manufacturing techniques and intricacies related to qualification testing of early models;
Ability to ensure or adjust the scope / budget / timelines to meet program requirements;
Ability to conceptually link macro level project plans to micro level tasks;
Strong proposal, technical and specification writing skills;
Ability to learn quickly and adapt to rapidly evolving technologies;
Capable of consistently demonstrating good judgment, technical expertise and effective communication skills to engineering staff, customers and management stakeholders; and
Demonstrate strong verbal communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
