Responsibilities include providing legal support to provincially regulated consumer lending business.
Core Job Functions :
Managing defensive litigation
Providing legal support to human resources team on employment law matters
Support the Marketing group, including with intellectual property and branding issues, content review, contests and new initiatives.
Drafting, negotiating and review of commercial contracts
Respond to legal questions from branches, referencing company policy when applicable and provide assistance to centralized groups where applicable (e.
g., centralized mortgage services, centralized collections)
Assist in providing legal advice, contract review and drafting regarding retail Point of Sale (POS) financing and auto financing
Other duties as defined by management

A Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws (LLB.) degree.
Must be licensed to practice law in Canada and a lawyer in good standing with a provincial law society.
5 - 6 years litigation or similar experience in law firm or corporate setting preferably in the areas of banking, corporate or consumer finance.
Experience advising human resources teams.
Strong working knowledge and experience with federal and provincial consumer lending laws preferred but not required.
Organizational skills are very important as lawyers maintain a large workload. Ability to analyze and evaluate statutes and regulations and to determine their impact to the business is also critical.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
Fully bilingual (English and French).
Ability to work well alone or in a team setting with others in the department and the business units.
Highly motivated, energetic, enthusiastic and entrepreneurial.
Computer skills in MS Office
A self-motivated, responsible lawyer is needed to be able to follow up on tasks. Must be able to recognize problems and propose creative and practical solutions.
Accountable for workload assigned as well as other special projects assigned by the direct report, the Deputy General Counsel.
