This role will be a member of the Polyethylene Execution Excellence R&D team at the Centre for Applied Research (CAR). The team focuses on the successful execution of R&D projects that derive improved efficiency and competitiveness for NOVA Chemicals’ polyethylene manufacturing assets, as well as providing plant support to the polyethylene manufacturing asset for enhanced reliability and operation excellence.

Responsibilities :

This position requires a strong knowledge of polyolefin processes, with focus on polyethylene and gas phase polymerization processes to carry out research projects in related areas.

Typical responsibilities may include but are not limited to :

  • Initiate or lead projects that pertain to the exploration, improvement, development, or implementation of new or existing products and catalyst solutions.
  • Meet research or other project goals within time and budget constraints.

  • Build and maintain relationships across the organization, cutting across functional boundaries to enable commercialization of new catalyst developments and scale up of value-added products for LLDPE and HDPE gas phase assets.
  • Identify problems and apply original and innovative thinking to produce new ideas and create innovative solutions.
  • Lead plant trouble-shooting requests and projects in support of our polyethylene assets.
  • Engaging in knowledge building programs and method development and with generating novel ideas leading to the development of intellectual property assets.
  • Coach, mentor and guide junior staff.
  • Qualifications :

    The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or MSc. in Chemical Engineering with 8+ years of polymerization-based experience.

  • Experience with polyolefin processes, with focus on polyethylene; gas phase polymerization processes; reaction modeling;
  • fluidized bed reactor; catalyst innovations; polymerization technology development / design / operations and troubleshooting (LLDPE, HDPE, LDPE, etc.).

  • Demonstrated experience for leading projects and cross-functional collaborations to improve competitiveness of NOVA’s gas phase assets, scale up process optimization and new products / catalyst technologies.
  • Act as an internal technical expert with broad technical knowledge, recognized and sought out by peers, management and project sponsors with the ability to manage, mentor and develop junior colleagues.
  • Excellent consultation and communication skills. Must work well in a team setting with cross-functional interactions spanning R&D, Technical service, and Marketing and Manufacturing.
  • Strong project and time management capabilities, and aptitude for problem solving / troubleshooting.
