The Opportunity :

As a Mechanical Engineering student, you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge of engineering principals and gain valuable hands-on experience by solving engineering and design problems for our world class mining operations.

You will be working in our Major Projects group in one of the following areas : Primary upgrading, Secondary upgrading, Support Units, Utilities and Off-Sites.

There is also an opportunity to work for the sustaining capital project group within the project engineering team.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Work with mechanical discipline lead to learn basis principals of engineering and design
  • Support the professional engineers in developing the technical scope of work for procurement of mechanical equipment
  • Utilize hands-on mechanical aptitude and experience to solve daily problems to increase and maintain quality of design development
  • Gain insight into how the Oil and Gas industry operates
  • For the sustaining projects, the student will be introduced to project management activities for multi-discipline scope within the upgrader area
  • Introduction to the management of change process during project execution
  • Other Details :

  • Work Location : Calgary head office, or Horizon Oil sands, north of Fort McMurray, AB
  • Term Length : 4 to 12 months
  • Term Start : January, May or September 2022
  • This is a safety sensitive position
  • For site based roles, company sponsored fly-in / fly-out and accommodations are provided
  • Eligible for student relocation assistance to Fort McMurray, Calgary or Edmonton if living 100 km outside any of the areas mentioned above
  • Skills & Qualifications :

  • Currently enrolled in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of a of a Bachelor degree program specializing in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of the basic design principles. Work experience with an engineering firm is considered an asset.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Possess a valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s license or equivalent out of province license with a reasonably clean driver abstract
  • A pre-employment drug and alcohol test must successfully be complete
  • Successful applicants must provide acceptable evidence of being fully immunized against COVID-19 (two doses of Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine, plus 14 days after your second vaccination) before a start date can be set.
