About the Position

Located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Salient Energy is a company focused on creating a carbon-free future. Our proprietary zinc-ion batteries are a low-cost, long-lasting, and safe battery that can be paired with renewable energy sources to replace the coal and natural gas that are destroying the planet.

We are looking for a passionate and talented technician to join our team as we develop the zinc-ion battery for commercialization.

This role requires diligence and creative problem solving to help our team make the best use of our space while increasing efficiency and workflow.

This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a team bringing a revolutionary clean technology to market.

Responsible for :

Solving technical problems associated with the lab facility to support the installation of new equipment and continuously improve the workflow of R&D activities, as well as organizing and maintaining lab tools / equipment, and recording inventory data.

Key routine tasks :

  • Ensure smooth day-to-day operation of the R&D lab. Conduct regular lab inspections.
  • Assist the lab manager in ensuring health, safety, and security procedures are followed, as well as the company’s standards.
  • The lab technician is expected to hold other staff accountable regarding their laboratory practices.

  • Organize and maintain lab tools and equipment according to schedule and good practice. Maintain a tool / hardware inventory.
  • Regularly participate in the cleaning of equipment and working area. The technician is not expected to become the designated lab janitor and should feel comfortable calling people out when they do not clean after conducting work.
  • Receive Materials Requisitions from the R&D team, process them and place orders for supplies and chemicals. Follow up until reception of goods.
  • If necessary, repackage goods (chemicals, parts) into smaller, more manageable containers. Label, store appropriately and input them into the inventory system.
  • Maintain the chemical inventory up-to-date and ensure hazardous chemicals are stored in their proper location. Update online and hard copy of SDS if new chemical.
  • Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced with sufficient supplies. If not, place necessary orders autonomously.
  • Produce purchasing and inventory reports when required.

    Others occasional tasks :

  • Assist the lab manager with space design, rearrangement of existing space to accommodate new R&D activities or setup of new R&D space as the company grows.
  • Build equipment or experimental setups (frames, rigs, platforms, safety guard or fences) using basic woodworking, plumbing and metalworking tools, such as screwdrivers, hand saws, drills, skill saws, mitre / chop saws, sanders, clamps, pliers, cutters, etc.
  • Assist the lab manager with developing the company’s health and safety program. Participate in Risk Assessments of lab processes and equipment.
  • Interact with third-party machine shops / manufacturers of custom experimental equipment
  • Assist R&D staff with conducting chemistry experiments or production runs (if capable).
  • Assist the procurement manager with IT equipment assembly or networking (if capable).
  • Key working relationships :

  • Work primarily under the supervision of the lab manager, for all matters related to health and safety, as well as general lab operations.
  • Work with Engineering during design and assembly of experimental setups
  • Work with the Procurement manager to place and follow up with equipment orders.
  • Daily interactions with R&D staff in the lab
