This is a volunteer position on every other Wednesday evening. The facilitator reports to the Supervisor at Directions Youth Services Centre.
This position facilitates the use of the art room at Directions by youth who access the centre. PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To provide mentorship and guidance to street-involved youth from the Downtown South / Granville Street area in a variety of visual arts.
To create a safe environment where youth can express themselves through art, and nurture youth’s interests in different media of artistic expression. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitating art room operations
Planning, organising, and implementing appropriate art-related educational activities
Maintaining art room equipment and inventories
Maintaining relevant documentation and time sheets
Ensuring open communication with program management
Adhering to all program and agency policies, procedures, and safety standards, including the agency’s confidentiality policy, and timely, legally-required reporting of concerns around the risk of harm to self or others, and child protection concerns.
Modeling pro-social behaviour for program participants
Maintaining a relationship with art program supporters
Attending training and open house events as requested
Maintaining a culture of people helping people help themselves
QUALIFICATIONS Experience :
Experience working with at-risk, street entrenched and homeless youth is an asset
Applicants with personal experience of addiction or street involvement require a minimum of two years clean / sober and away from services
Knowledge of adolescent development, alcohol and drug abuse issues, sexually exploited youth and street-involved activities
Relevant arts and media skills
Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients
Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients
Ability to work in an inclusive and non-judgemental manner with clients
