Job Description

What You’ll Be Doing

Reporting to the Vice President, Indigenous Markets, Commercial Banking, the Director is responsible for meeting the needs of our Indigenous clients and driving business growth in the commercial segments by working as the key relationship manager for their clients.

The Director will manage and grow a portfolio by proactively developing new business opportunities in the community and ensuring clients’ day-to-day banking needs are being met at the highest level.

The Director leverages partnerships with the broader market team and coordinates with key internal partners across CIBC to deliver a broad range of Commercial Banking and financial solutions.

This position is an ideal choice for experienced candidates with exceptional leadership skills, developed business credit management skills, a depth of experience in working with commercial banking clients and a passion for working in a client-centric environment that aligns to a strong performance culture.

Due to the unique characteristics and needs of the Indigenous client segment, the Director has experience with Indigenous communities and businesses and is knowledgeable about the operations of Indigenous economic development corporations.

This role is open to multiple locations throughout Ontario.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Relationship Building Create an environment which fosters an exceptional service culture, supports partnering behavior and capitalizes on individuals’ expertise to provide best in class service and overall relationship management to our clients.
  • Manage relationship with Indigenous commercial clients, responsible to be the client advocate within the Bank, proactively work with relevant internal banking partners.

    Actively monitor and manage the profitability of CIBC’s relationship with Indigenous clients within the context of building a long-term mutually beneficial relationship through an approach that remains respectful about the client’s culture, community and values, and fully understanding the goals, objectives and status of the client’s business.

    Ensure that we deliver a one team approach by ensuring that we present solutions that address every aspect of the Indigenous client’s relationship with CIBC.

    Conduct client relationship reviews annually and support Net Promoter Score activities to ensure retention.

  • Business Development Continuously update knowledge on new products and remain current with Indigenous initiatives / programs offered by internal partners that may be of value to clients.
  • Originate new client relationships that leverage knowledge and expertise, CIBC’s capabilities and that meet CIBC risk tolerances and profitability hurdles, to grow the Indigenous Banking business and CIBC’s overall Indigenous portfolio.

    Proactively assess client needs and propose products / solutions to meet those needs and the client’s broader business objectives.

    Ensure that clients continue to be aware of the benefits of using these products, as well as new products available to them.

  • Credit Management Structure, negotiate and document credit and cash management arrangements with clients and prospects that meet client needs.
  • Accountable for credit risk, credit expiries and the credit application process. Ensure a thorough understanding of the client’s business and ensure risk ratings reflect the inherent risk at all times.

  • Risk Management - Identifies, in a timely manner, any deteriorating credit situations and takes the necessary steps to protect the Bank’s position, including early advice to Credit Risk Management, and referral to a high risk manager (if applicable).
  • Manage all dealings internally and with clients in a manner consistent with the standards prescribed by CIBC policies and procedures, including Reputation and Legal Risk, Anti-Money Laundering, Code of Conduct, Credit Management, etc.

  • Leadership Provide active leadership and guidance to Commercial Banking Relationship Managers in executing and managing client relationships, including delivery of credit and cash management services.
  • Create an environment which supports partnering behavior and capitalizes on individuals’ expertise to provide best in class service to our clients.

    Build team and individual capabilities to ensure employees are capable of delivering on Commercial Banking’s value proposition.

    Who You Are

  • You have demonstrated ability to navigate the intricacies unique to Indigenous businesses, governance structures and land designations, and how these characteristics influence credit and lending processes.
  • You have experience in commercial banking , proven business development skills, advanced knowledge of risk and credit portfolio management, and highly developed negotiating skills.
  • You have demonstrated selling skills including an ability to identify financial advisory and M&A opportunities with clients.

    You have a demonstrated ability to identify and address deteriorating credit issues.

  • You have knowledge of strategic planning, business planning, forecasting, and modeling gained through extensive hands-on experience.
  • The incumbent must be able to advise on strategic and best practices for growing and managing an Indigenous corporation.

  • You have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
