Skills and Qualifications

Include, but not limited to, the following minimum skills and qualifications :

  • Post Secondary Education (2 years);
  • Three (3) years of previous experience;
  • Solid understanding of federal legislation including the Canada Labour Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, Workers' Compensation, and Health and Safety legislation;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Able to handle sensitive and confidential issues with discretion, tact and diplomacy;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written & verbal) and conflict resolution skills to deal effectively with multiple stakeholders;
  • Proven ability to identify sensitive situations and recognize the impact of potential solutions;
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results tactfully and through collaboration and influence;
  • Adept at managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast paced, team-oriented environment while ensuring accuracy, confidentially and effective time management;
  • Strong client focus and excellent professional judgment, sound analytical, problem solving and negotiation skills ;
  • Able to work independently under broad management direction while maintaining interdependence locally and with other departments;
  • Committed to continuous improvement and display a high level of initiative, creativity and enthusiasm;
  • Must be proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet; experience with HRIS preferred;
  • CHRP designation an asset;
  • Experience working in a unionized environment an asset;
  • Ability to communicate in Inuktut a definite asset;
  • Ability to obtain and retain an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card in accordance with the Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance Program regulated by Transport Canada.
  • Duties and Responsibilities

    Interested candidates should be able to perform the following duties and responsibilities :

  • Assume a vital role towards achievement of our strategic improvement goals that will further enable Canadian North to improve employee satisfaction, enhance customer service and improve organizational effectiveness through the employee benefits and retirement programs;
  • Main point of contact for the employee and management related questions regarding the Benefit Program, Retirement Program and Employee Assistance Program;
  • facilitate initiatives and projects related to these programs;
  • Advise and coach Management regarding issues related to occupational (workers' compensation) and non-occupational (disability) claims;
  • Oversight of Benefits Coordinator's facilitation of activities related to the employee's application for Short Term, Long Term Disability and worker's compensation benefits;
  • responsible for managing this function and directly handling complex occupational and non-occupational claims;
  • Develop and facilitate the implementation of individualized gradual return to work and permanent accommodation / alternative work processes for all cases while collaborating with workplace parties to resolve barriers to successful and sustainable accommodations and return to work plans;
  • Work pro-actively with and management, employee and union with respect to Duty to Accommodate matters, including working with Safety regarding ergonomics related matters, assessments and implementation of recommendations;
  • Advise employees and management on all Leave of Absence questions and inquiries and maintain communication with employees and management regarding return to work;
  • Lead WSIB appeals and liaise with third party providers to assist with appeals as required;
  • Responsible for coordinating reporting and production for any benefits program or worker's compensation board audits;
  • Collect and analyze data and prepares applicable reports and proposals;
  • Other duties as assigned.
