Position Summary

BCIT’s Alumni Relations, Advancement department is seeking a regular, full time (1.0 FTE) Communication Specialist . This position is the internal communications lead for the Advancement division and is responsible for creating and implementing communication plans and strategies in support of the overall goals of the Institute.

Working closely with the Communications Manager, Advancement and other members of the Advancement team, the Communications Specialist contributes to the development and execution of a variety of communications strategies and liaises with external stakeholders on specific initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities


In conjunction with the Communications Manager, Advancement, participates in developing strategic communications initiatives in order to enhance growth and development of the Advancement division’s business objectives :

  • Consults and collaborates with management to develop communications strategies and responses to both internal and external matters, including reputation, profile management and sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Liaises with internal and external stakeholders on emerging issues and concerns raised from the public or media; consults with the Manager as appropriate.
  • Liaises with donors and alumni of all calibre, writes, edits, and publishes content on variety of platforms internal and external.
  • Provides communications counsel to support administration and other internal stakeholders.
  • Writes and edits a variety of communications pieces for internal and external publications.
  • Oversees production of Advancement’s content on internal communication channels, including the intranet and the employee newsletter.
  • Oversees external communication channels, including websites, newsletters and social media tools.
  • Supports overarching Advancement division with communications strategy through development and implementation.
  • Participates actively in Advancement division’s positioning initiatives such as crafting new logos, comprehensive and annual campaigns.
  • Provides assistance and backup to other positions on an as-needed basis and may include speech writing, interviewing, writing and liaison.
  • Must be able to travel to interviews with alumni and industry partners.
  • Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).
  • Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.

  • Diploma in Communications or relevant field including courses in writing, publishing, editing and marketing.
  • Two years of general experience plus four years of relevant, practical experience in a similar position, preferably in the public sector or post-secondary education environment.
  • Strong computing and social media skills, including fluency in content management, presentation, and word processing software applications.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written, demonstrating a superior command of the English language.
  • Ability to interview, articulate, and write for a variety of audiences and communication tools.
  • Advanced editing and proofreading skills.
  • A strong grasp of best practices for internal communications, including experience performing internal communications and consultation functions.
  • Professional demeanour with a demonstrated ability to use sound judgement, tact, and discretion in dealing with a variety of sensitive and confidential issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and effectively handle changing priorities.
  • Experience with executive communications functions such as preparing briefings and speech writing.
  • Familiar with communications platforms and tools, including web publishing, graphic design and e-communications software.
  • Please note : These are the minimum required qualifications. This position is a day shift position as defined in Article 14.
