The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (FoMD) is seeking a forward thinking, determined, and strategic professional to join the Faculty’s leadership team as the Senior Officer, Finance.
Reporting to the Dean, you will provide strategic financial leadership for one of the largest faculties within the University of Alberta (U of A).
You will contribute to the strategic plan, develop objectives, establish processes, enhance relationships and undertake a multitude of financial and information technology challenges that will further enhance the faculty success.
As the Senior Officer, Finance ,you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on healthcare education and research by bringing a disciplined approach to evaluating and improving FoMD’s financial risk management, internal control and financial processes, while being adaptable to new and changing priorities.
Your exceptional collaboration and relationship building skills will be key to developing and maintaining effective relationships with all stakeholders, including one of the largest joint relationships with Alberta Health Services (AHS).
Using your strong, visionary leadership skills, you will lead by example and build an engaged workplace culture.

As the Senior Officer, Finance, you will :
Be a member of the Faculty’s Executive Team and contribute to the faculty vision, values and strategic plan
Implement financial strategies to address the strategic plan and provide progress reports on alignment and delivery
Lead the faculty on financial planning, budgeting and forecasting of approximately $349 Million ensuring that there is effective overall management and internal controls of all financial matters which includes complex facets of the University budget process and systems, management of endowments, Alberta Health Funding, donations and research funding requirements
Provide leadership regarding information technology related to the Faculty’s administrative systems and the joint relationship with AHS
Oversee all financial aspects of space planning, working with the Vice Dean, Faculty Affairs and the Director of Facility Planning and Projects
Drive continuous improvement in the services and operations of the Faculty while demonstrating an understanding of unit needs, sector trends, and best practices
Provide strategic financial advice and guidance to the Dean, Faculty Executive Committee, the Faculty's Chair Committee and members thereof, including undertaking recurring and special assignments / projects that relate to strategic initiatives of the Faculty and its units
Participate on the Faculty's key strategic committees as well as representing the Faculty on certain University and government committees, and institutional wide strategies, programs, and services
Provide leadership and direction to the Finance and Information Management teams
To be successful as the Senior Officer, Finance , you will possess :
University degree in a related discipline required; a graduate degree in business is preferred
A recognized accounting designation, such as a CPA, is required
8-10 years related experience at a senior management level including management of the financial function in a large organization, preferably in a sector related to public service, health services, academic, or health research & policy
Understanding and experience overseeing an IT function
Demonstrated experience in strategic and business planning, budgeting, policy development, performance measurement and reporting, and financial accountability
Interpersonal and management skills and perspective necessary to effectively inspire and motivate a team of professional and administrative staff in the finance and IT fields
Ability to establish and maintain a highly productive working relationship with internal and external Senior level Professionals
Qualities of respectful and politically astute. You understand when to involve certain stakeholders, and have driven partnerships that have helped to leverage your work
Ability to address strategic issues with creativity and innovation, while keeping an eye on the fundamentals and knows when it is appropriate to further innovate, use the fundamentals already in place, or adapt practices from another organization
In accordance with the Handbook of Employment for Management and Professional Staff (Excluded), this full-time continuing position offers an annual salary range, which will be commensurate with qualifications.
