With assets under administration of $145.6 billion, British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors.
Since its inception in 2000, BCI has grown significantly and is now regarded as one of Canada’s most influential financial institutions with a diverse and global mix of assets.
BCI is at an exciting time in its history. The goal is to position the corporation to manage over $200 billion in assets over the coming years and BCI is on pace to reach 600 employees over the next few years.
Recognizing that robust in-house investment risk management capabilities are key to making informed investment decisions, BCI has identified the enhancement of the Investment Strategy & Risk group as a key strategic focus for the organization.
As part of this, a new role has been created with a broad mandate. Reporting to the Vice President, Investment Risk, the Director, Clients & Total Portfolio Risk Management is responsible for the monitoring and reporting of risk to key stakeholders such BCI Board, BCI clients and the asset classes and for supporting the asset class risk managers of both private and public markets and supporting the Vice President, Investment Risk at the total fund level.
This will be a key leadership role with a chance to build and manage a team that will provide effective risk analysis and develop insightful and actionable reporting across the asset classes and at the total fund level.
The Director will also assist the Vice President in fostering a culture of risk management within the organization and establishing a sound investment risk governance framework.
The ideal candidate can come from a similar risk function within another investment or banking organization or have worked in a management consulting capacity where they would have exposure to financial or investment risk concepts, risk governance, and reporting.
While experience and appreciation for investment risk, risk modeling and reporting, risk governance and oversight, and market risk will be a significant asset, BCI is not necessarily seeking a technical risk expert.
The individual’s business / strategic acumen, governance knowledge, process improvement abilities, and communication skills, along with leadership capabilities will be essential to success in the Director role Based in Victoria, this is a unique opportunity to take on a key leadership, client-
facing role with a broad and strategic mandate to help shape a growing investment risk function that is well-regarded within the organization and seen as a true partner to the business.
