What you can expect in a typical day

As we expand and grow our engineering team in Saint John, NB, we are looking for a Materials Engineer to support capital project development work for operations within our refining and terminal operations.

You will create plans to monitor how metals and materials are performing and evaluate their deterioration. From this, you will determine associated risks and create both short and long-term solutions to mitigate those risks.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and review specifications, including design criteria.
  • Prepare metallurgical selection diagrams and metallurgical selection reports, review equipment packages and specifications related to materials;
  • welding, nondestructive examination, insulation, and coatings.

  • Review vendor equipment documentation within the discipline and from other disciplines for compliance with project requirements, and actively seek discrepancy resolution.
  • Review and approve vendor lists, prepare quotation requests, bid tabulations, purchase orders, and review substitutions for technical acceptability.
  • Provide materials selection support for capital and reliability projects.
  • Provide support to asset integrity teams when required regarding problem solving, equipment risk management processes, root cause analysis for equipment and piping asset integrity issues, equipment remaining life and fitness for service analyses, etc.
  • Demonstrate safety practices with all procedures.
  • Follow all asset integrity processes and procedures.
  • Maintain reporting and record keeping to department policy and standards.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance within various jurisdictions.
  • Act as a technical resource on complex matters affecting operations when requested.
  • Support the development, reviews and revisions of relevant Irving Oil specifications and standards.
  • Provide technical support for the design, selection, repair, and alteration of pressure vessels, tanks, piping and relief valves in accordance with applicable ASME and API codes and IOR’s engineering standards.
  • What you’ll need to succeed

  • Safety as-a-way-of-life mindset.
  • Good knowledge of ASME, API codes, NACE standards.
  • Analytical mindset to perform risk analyses in specified areas of the refinery and terminals using industry best practices.
  • Able to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of corrosion and damage mechanisms associated with refinery service.
  • Experience with all types of mechanical static equipment (pressure vessels, fired heaters, tanks, heat exchangers, etc.
  • and piping components utilized in the oil refining.

  • Ability to multitask in a fast paced environment : meet deadlines, develop plans, manage workloads with sound decision making skills, and work autonomously while collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards when working on-site.
  • Travel

  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Education and experience

  • University degree in engineering and / or materials science.
  • Knowledge of complex engineering concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Specialty in metallurgy / Materials engineering required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a heavy, industrial environment; oil and gas preferred.
  • PEng designation is a definite asset.
  • Background in welding is an asset.
