Summary of Responsibilities :

Reporting to the General Manager, supervising a team of 17 Colleagues, the Director of Engineering will be a proactive, innovator and good communicator.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following :

  • Consistently offer professional, friendly and engaging service;
  • Lead and manage the day to day activities of the Maintenance department and ensure all standards are followed;
  • Oversee ongoing maintenance, repair and preventative maintenance in the Hotel with a focus to improve efficiency, profitability and service levels;
  • Co-ordinate renovation and capital projects, managing outside contractors as required;
  • Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget and assist in the preparation of the capital plan;
  • Review ongoing service contracts ensuring superior performance and competitive pricing;
  • Monitor energy and water management programs to ensure cost effective use of utilities;
  • Provide overall direction to department towards the achievement of company, hotel and departmental objectives;
  • Monitor the Hotel's Preventative Maintenance Program;
  • Manage and co-ordinate outside contractors within established guidelines;
  • Ensure the hotel complies with all Government regulations pertaining to building code requirements, health, fire and life safety programs;
  • Maintain close and effective working relationship with ownership representatives, department heads and external contractors;
  • Establish quantitative standards of performance and utilizes performance management principles to fully maximize employee productivity;
  • Act as a key member of the hotel’s emergency operations and is able to provide expertise in building operations and contingency plans for disaster management;
  • Perform periodic inspections to buildings and services, and preparing reports for improvements;
  • Oversee safety standards, performance management, recruiting and training of the Engineering Department;
  • Balance operational, administrative and Colleague needs;
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures;
  • Follow all safety policies;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • Qualifications :

  • Previous experience as Project Manager or Chief Engineer (hotel or service environment preferred);
  • Engineering degree / diploma, professional engineer an asset;
  • First Class Station Engineer Certification preferable;
  • Heritage building knowledge is an asset;
  • Knowledgeable in all regulations such as building codes, fire and health department requirements;
  • Must have experience in leading a team of Maintenance Employees;
  • Excellent Knowledge of Building HVAC operations, Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical systems;
  • Skill in use of computers and software programs associated with Property Operations;
  • Ability to review plans and blue prints;
  • Strong business background with an entrepreneurial spirit;
  • Ability to positively communicate and instruct employees;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, changing conditions and priorities;
  • Ability to effectively review, assess and modify work as needed to ensure continual progress towards desired results;
  • Ability to handle multiple complex projects concurrently with a focus on results;
  • Excellent teamwork skills and high level of initiative essential;
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement with current knowledge on cutting edge technologies;
  • Strong interpersonal and problem solving abilities;
  • Ability to focus attention on guest needs, remaining calm and courteous at all times;
  • Bilingual, French / English, an asset;
  • Physical Aspects of Position (included but not limited to) :

  • Frequent standing and walking throughout shift
  • Must be able to lift and carry heavy items (up to 50 lbs)
