As a Psychogeriatric Mental Health Clinician with the Mental Health Geriatric team focused in Substance Abuse you will :

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary mental health care team to provide geriatric services for individuals who are either under 65 years of age and experiencing early onset dementia or are 65 years and older and experiencing mental health problems or problems normally associate with aging.
  • Perform key duties such as : psychogeriatric assessments;treatment planning;consultation and liaison;individual counselling and education;
  • and support to provide integration and continuity across the care continuum and coordinate client access to services.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with and consult with clients, their families and colleagues to provide appropriate treatment services based on best practices and client needs.

    QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in a Behavioural Science and three (3) years’ recent related experience providing psychiatric services to older adults or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Valid BC Drivers License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Knowledge & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of issues associated with aging, chronic illness and psychosocial factors such as caregiver issues, family dynamics and communication patterns.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of assessment and treatment of psychiatric clients including geriatric psychopathology of depression, delusions, delirium, dementia as well as principles of management of personality disorders.
  • Broad knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side-effects).
  • Broad knowledge of other geriatric facilities and resources and their roles in client care.
  • Broad knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to client, including abuse and neglect legislation.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct mental health assessments, and provide treatment planning and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide counselling, psycho-education, and consultation services.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of theory and practice to a case management process.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with clients and their families, colleagues, physician, and other health care staff, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Demonstrated listening and information seeking skills that promotes communication and lead to a co-operative approach to problem solving within a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve, adjust to new or unexpected events, and deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail software.
